Several readers, including Kay and Stephan, have sent me emails raving about the interiors in the AMC series, Mad Men. I checked out all the promo video on their website, and sure enough, the set and costume design is fantastic. The series is set in 1960. The corporate interiors are all very modern, but the home interiors – as we’ve discussed often – are eclectic. Case in point: Distressed Betty Draper’s great knotty pine kitchen.

Kitchens – Countertops

My local Re-Store was offering some maple flooring from bowling alley – and some handy homeowner re-purposed it into the most excellent countertop. Isn’t it great?! …Right up there with the Teacups Chandelier we looked at a while ago. Related Posts Basement bowling alley in 1962 Michigan time capsule house for sale — heaven! What [...]

Our arsenal of suppliers for metal kitchen countertop edging continues to grow — with the addition of Eagle Moulding, a distributor in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Eagle Mouldings’ large inventory includes a two styles of aluminum countertop edgings, in a variety of sizes.Eagle Moulding is the direct supplier to many furniture manufacturers and, in fact, I see at [...]

Wow, does anyone know about countertops like these? Becky recently bought a time capsule and her french provincial kitchen (I’d call it) includes these countertops. Reminds me of these Fritz floor tiles. Anyone work with this back in the day who knows? Kind of, an early-days version of Silestone or the other composite-quartz countertops sold [...]

I have been working on retro laminates lately – and originally thought there were only these big five: Wilsonart, Formica, Pionite, Nevamar and Arborite. But – I’ve now discovered a 6th company – Arpa USA. They have a terrific-looking portfolio — of solids, in particular. Some of the greens come darn close to that famous [...]

Seems like I’m starting the week off with the spotlight on RESOURCES! I was checking out Formica’s site recently – and saw these two new laminates. They both have a nice retro groove, underscored by their names, Atomic Orange and Atomic Turf. Back in the postwar era, there were a number of laminates that had [...]

Lots more great 1960 interiors on season 2 of Mad Men
Six great 1961 interiors – floors, furniture, art, outrageous interiors and more

Mad Men has had me hooked from the very first episode 4 years ago! I was drawn in by the beautiful sets! I find myself taking in the details of the set decorations, clothing and hair styles as much as the story! I love the Draper’s house! They sold it in this past season, too bad, I loved Betty’s kitchen, family room, all the rooms. The producers pay so much attention to each detail. If you are a regular viewer and read the blog you know that viewers like me scan the sets for any out of place detail and are sure to let them know if anything is not authentic. To date I can’t really recall any such flubs! Great viewing for the set decorations, even the cars have been awesome! Thanks for a great post!
