It’s 1955 — time for “A Word from the Wives”

For anyone into 50s steel kitchens, this vignette for a home builders’ show is priceless. The Republic steel kitchen is to die for.

Moreover, this short 1955 movie really underscores the cultural dynamic going on in the postwar period — a push from all sides for Americans to keep the market economy moving by building new homes and spending on all the latest technology. By 1953 or so, the immediate needs of the war were attended to. After that, the dialing up of the ‘consumer economy’ began in earnest…and has never stopped.

A young Darren McGavin plays the hapless husband, He also played the hysterical dad in the charming, nostalgic and side splitting retro movie A Christmas Story that runs as a marathon on TV every Christmas day.

WHAT A FIND! That is the most wonderful movie! There are so many reasons to love that one and YES! The kitchen is great!

So, dear Pam, what did they do BEFORE the water heater?

Hi Mary-Frances, yes, I thought you’d like this movie :) …Hmmm. Before the water heater…maybe a boiler of some sort? And they also used to have those stoves that held hot water on one side. I don’t think people bathed as much either! Mom - what’s the answer here?

There’s nothing like “keeping up with the Jones’s” I real insight into another era. It makes me appreciate all those mod cons that we all take for granted. x

Wow — she didn’t like her kitchen, and got a whole new house! And it’s so cute, too. This film was lots of fun. Thanks!

I love those louvered doors above the counter in the kitchen.

My grandmother had an entirely pink kitchen. All the appliances were pink, even the fridge. The washer and dryer, also pink, had a prominent place there. The walls were covered with very shiny silver stainless steel tiles. I wish I had some old photos of their house.
