It’s time to ramp up for a weekend — of gardening and planning for summertime outdoor landscaping projects. After last Friday’s post on fencing for Beatnik Babe, many readers wrote to say “More more more on landscaping” and everyone seems interested in fences. So I was grateful when the mysterious Laura B. sent me an email and the scans in today’s post. She actually sent pages on screens and fences. These are the screens, I’ll show fences tomorrow:
Hi Pam - After your post today, I thought you would enjoy these fence pics from my Better Homes and Gardens Guide to Landscaping.
Hope you have a great weekend
- LauraThank you, Laura B. You, too!

Those are great screens and they definitely gave fuel to some ideas! I can’t wait to see the fences!
Hi - I’m the mysterious Laura B.! I’m from Portland, OR and am in the midst of renovating my 1952 MCM home.

Thanks for these fencing posts. One more thing to consider as we do work around our place. Currently we have chain link around most of the backyard, as do most of the other houses in the area. (Is chain link considered retro?)
Yes, Sumac Sue, chain link was probably the #1 fencing choice in the postwar period. Inexpensive, functional, abundant - and hey, I even recall seeing some that were ‘design-y’. I’m on the lookout for some good vintage material to post…
Oh my! Those fences are great. I still haven’t hired the contractor to do our fence yet, as I’m still considering all the possibilities. (Do I have trouble making decisions? Yes.) I think I’m still leaning toward the basketweave style, but I’ve seen some interesting variations on it.
Now I want my husband to make one of those wacky screens (bottom left photo) between our driveway and the neighbor’s.
