Drexel mid century dining room chairs – today’s ebay pick

I’m in love with vintage 50s Drexel furniture. I’ll feature Ohio Catherine’s home soon – and you should see the matching set she has in a bedroom and dining room — gorgeous! Does anyone know the name of this design? To me, it has a Shaker feel. The set is in Houston, the upholstery looks new/great, and there is a matching table.

Afternoon update:

Thanks, Troy, for identifying this as Drexel Declaration. Here’s what’s posted on the site that Troy links to, in his comment. There are no photos of the dining room chairs on the link, but see the “step table” in the photo, on the right? It clearly shows detail linking the design to the chairs above. Cool!

Drexel
Drexel Declaration was designed by Kip Stewart. His idea was to link the American craftsmanship of the Shakers with the modernism of the late fifties and early sixties. The original knobs are white porcelain…

And I just purchased a table and six chairs on ebay. Love the stuff.

    Enjoy your blog! -T

Hey SanFran Troy, thanks!!!! Hey I looked at your website. Are all those vintage airline travel bags truly yours?

  3. troysf says:

Hey 50sPam, truly!!!! I’ve been collecting vintage airline bags for a number of years. Have kinda kicked the habit lately – it’s getting increasingly difficult to find bags I want that I don’t already have ;-) and my storage space is packed to the gills.

  4. 50sPam says:

Hey SF Troy, doing this blog makes me so damn perky I can’t stand myself sometimes!!!! If you don’t mind, can I do a post on your collection some time soon – using one of your images?

  5. troysf says:

Hey 50sPam, of course! Your readers may enjoy the vintage styles and graphics of these airline bags. In the house of my dreams I’d have a long wall displaying my choice bags on glass shelving. But imagine the constant pesky dusting! ;-) I check your blog on a daily basis – your perkyness is contagious!

TroySF, I assure you that in real life, I balance perky with cranky and difficult to live with, especially without my coffee. Watch for the post – many thanks!

After reading Pam’s post on Drexel furniture, I started doing some searching around and am now bidding on a lovely dining table and chairs on eBay. The seller is listing it as part of the Drexel Profile series, but it doesn’t look like any of the other Profile furniture I’ve seen. I originally had my heart set on a Heywood-Wakefield whalebone table, but after seeing the simplicity and beauty of the Drexel designs, I was won over. Thanks, Pam!

Please please, I appeal to all my retro ren friends not to bid against me!! I’ll post pics (if I win), and when my dining room is finished with new floor, new table and chairs, and new hanging “satellite” retractable lamp (which I also recently got from eBay).

  8. Laurelle says:

Has anyone seen the drexel signature that reads/looks; a circle around the words by Drexel? It is a black ink stamp on the bottom of the fabric covered wood seats.

  9. John Beech says:

We inherited a discontinued Drexel dining room collection and a cat. We know a little about the cat, he’s good natured, and nothing about the furniture. Regarding the furniture, I believe it’s called Profile. Anyway, can anybody help us learn something about it, and perhaps help us assign an approximate value for insurance purposes? The furniture, not the cat . . . he’s priceless!

Finally, somebody asked about the Drexel service mark on the bottom of the fabric covered chair seats; we have a photo if you wish to contact us. I can email it to you.

John, I know a little about the Drexel Profile line, as I have one of the dining room tables & chair sets. Mine is walnut, and I haven’t been able to find if other woods were also available in that design line.

Profile came out in the late 1950s, and is a sought-after midcentury modern Drexel design. (I believe it was made from 1955 to 1961.) It was designed by John Van Koert (here’s his NYT obit for more info on him: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9901EFDB163DF93AA25753C1A96E958260

I keep an eye on eBay for Profile pieces and I see them from time to time, and I’ve seen prices all over the place. I’m sure if you went to a retail retro furniture store, prices would be higher (maybe).

Does your dining room have the little vertical spindles on the backs of the chairs? I’m asking because there are at least two different designs of Profile dining chairs. Mine has a triangular hole cut out in the chair back. Here are some recent Profile eBay listings:

I have some Drexel Profile pieces that were passed down to me, and I’ve been researching information in the hopes of selling the pieces. I just found your site! It has been most helpful! I have the drop leaf extension table: with leaves down 42W x 26L, and with leaves up and extended with three 12″ leaves-106L. I also have 6 side chairs, the lighted china cabinet with frosted glass inset shelving, and the buffet. It’s a beautiful set, just not my taste in furniture. I’ve used it for the past 18 years, and I’m ready to find something more suited to my taste. Thanks for the great information on your site!

  12. Mid Mod Pam says:

Carol, you can also see the info…and leave this message on the Drexel Profile page, in case any buyers show up there: http://retrorenovation.com/re2-basics/furniture-favorites/drexel-profile/http://retrorenovation.com/re2-basics/retro-kitchens/

I have inherited a Drexel dinning room set and want to sell it. How do I go about doing it? It appears to be the Drexel Declaration and there is the lighted glass door china cabinet and buffet and table with 3 leaves and 6 chairs.

  14. Pam Kueber says:

Hi Lornah, there is a new forum coming – but for now, why don’t you put it in the “other stuff” category here: http://retrorenovation.com/forum

also, we now have a Drexel Declaration page here where you can leave your information. Be sure to list your location: http://retrorenovation.com/re2-basics/furniture-favorites/drexel-declaration/

Good luck – this is gorgeous furniture!

I have 4 Drexel walnut chairs designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart McDougall. The are captain chairs (I believe that’s what they are called) because the backs are rounded with a unique set of flat spindle slats going completely around from top to bottom. I got them with the seats missing but the frames are in near mint condition. I am looking for a picture of these in order to make cushions for them Is there a way I can send a picture because it’s difficult to explain these (rare) chairs

  16. Throughly Modern Billy says:

Part II- I was told they could be from the Drexel Declaration line..I also have 4 Drexel Profile chairs in mint condition and even found fabric almost identical to the original.

  17. pam kueber says:

Hi Billy, check out the photos in these galleries, which are available via the Fast & Easy furniture box: Drexel Declaration and Drexel Profile furniture lines

  18. Throughly Modern Billy says:

Hello Pam, I checked and I now believe that it the 4 chairs truly are from the Declaration line. They have the same spindles as the settle in those pictures. The brochure pics are very hard to see but I do see a captains chair listed. I need help in finding a good picture in order to get these back to their glory. I have search the internet with not much success rxcept for finding this site :D ..These chairs are really beautiful and extremely lite weight but sturdy.

Hi. I love your site. Can you help me? I have a few nice pieces of Drexel Triennale 1959 furniture and am looking all over the net but I cannot find one stick of Triennale Drexel furniture. This was a lovely series of furniture and I am perplexed that I cannot find anything at all about this line of furniture. Nothing for sale anywhere. Anything you can ad will only help me further my education and help me find more of this lovely retro furniture.
