Chicago Stefanie needs help to understand her midcentury Asian table

I have many many reader questions and stories in the queue - and now that the homepage is up and running again, I am going to get them out. First up - from Chicago Stefanie just this morning.
Hey Pam:
I’ve been reading your blog for about a month now and you’ve helped some people discover information about some of their items, and I was hoping you might be able to do the same for me. Several years ago I bought at a thrift store a large coffee table with bamboo legs and tiles on the top featuring some Chinese or Japanese kanji and Asian-style fans. I’d never seen anything like it and didn’t see anything like it again until last weekend when a friend and I were wandering a local antique mall. To my amazement I discovered a matching end table to my coffee table. It wasn’t in as good condition as my table, and the trim was a dark stained brown to my table’s light tan, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to complete a collection I never knew I had begun. I asked the woman at the mall if she knew anything about the table and all she could tell me was that it was “definitely mid-century.” My curiosity roused, I did the Google thing but with no luck. And as so many of the e-mails you post on your blog seem to say, if anyone could help me I thought it would be you. I’ve attached a picture of the tables. The coffee table is about three feet by three feet and about 18 inches tall. The end table is about three feet long and 19 inches wide and 20 inches tall, if it matters. Have you ever seen any tables such as these? Thank you for any information you may have.

Hey Stefanie, thanks for writing - and for being a part of the retro renovation community! This one is outside my knowledge area - although you know that I most definitely approve the midcentury modern/Asian mash up! Perhaps a reader can help. Ronn?
