Susan, If you have rust coming through it may be that there was water in the paint you used. Was it latex based? I heard that only urethane paint can be used if you are doing it yourself. We are remodeling our kitchen & do not have enough in the budget to have our cabinets professionally painted. We may try to do it ourselves but I am scared. We have the old 1950's metal cabinets.

I repainted my Youngstown aqua metal kithcen cabinets myself and they turned out good. But I soon had little spots showing up that look like rust.. where I had no rust before, any ideas on what may be causing this?

I have this kitchen as well. Was just going to touch up one of the drawers with a pink rustoleum that looked like a perfect match....it wasn't. Had to remove all the doors (those hinges are tricky), prime and paint...3 coats each. I wish I had even thought of the lead factor at the time. Have purchased a dark terra cotta tile that can be butted or grouted (planning to butt) and wasn't sure how they'd look, but having seen a few posts on Retro Renovations...I'm good.
