A reader wrote to ask how to bring the luster back to her vintage laminate countertops. Paste wax, maybe? To get the answer, I turned to expert Grace Jeffers. She is the writer, design historian and materials expert responsible for restoration of the Ralph Sr. and Sunny Wilson House – including its gorgeous Mondrian-style kitchen, [...]

I have da boomerang laminates covered one-by-one in other stories, but here, I pull them into one place for those renovators to compare and constrast. According to my research, there are three laminate boomerang designs — with a total of 14 possible colorways — available today. Updated January 2011: Wilsonart ads 11 more colors of [...]

UPDATE (Oct 2011): Click over to –> this story to get an update on all three sources for boomerang laminate. Here is a third selection of boomerang laminates to consider for your retro kitchen renovation. Wilsonart has informed me that residential buyers can buy from this “Indie” line …. it is just a special order placed [...]

These are sure a blast from the past: Glass combination trivets and cutting boards that are installed directly into your kitchen countertop. Yes: with metal rim aka Hudee ring. I think that these built-in cutting boards were all the rage in the 1970s, because there was one in our 1975 countertop, to the left of the sink. I’m not sure [...]

“…Eliminates the final telltale sign of laminate – the brown line.” I am a big believer in the idea that the most significant design shifts tend to come from technological breakthroughs. The advance of laminate kitchen countertops — replacing linoleum and wood in most kitchens in the 1950s — came as a result of the [...]

I have to confess that I actually like the painting. It fits so well with the whole Cowboy and Indians theme that was so prominent in the 1950s. It was the era of Western epic films, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, The Rifleman, etc. Every child, including myself, had to have western attire and toys. Now, if the painting is on black velvet, the kitsch factor goes up exponentially and I would have to buy it! How can anyone be a serious 1950s Retro Renovator without a painting on black velvet?!?
PSS, you are right. This one gets double bonus kitsch points. Even so, bad feng shui to have guns in the house.
Good thing Marshal Dillon, the Cartwrights, Victoria Barkley, and other good guys and gals in the posse back in the ’50s and ’60s didn’t know about feng shui!
The chairs are indeed scary, but I like the picture too. I like the sepia tones, and the rider and animals have a mythic quality.
Hi Judi aka SS. How are you doing? We haven’t heard from you in a while.
I’ve always loved velvet paintings.. This one isn’t so bad compared to the ever present Afro topless girls and the Devil on the toilet versions that pop up on ebay every once in a while!
Hi 50s Pam — I’ve been fine, busily working in my flower and vegetable beds. While my grounds do not have the polish that Maryanne’s have in Pittsfield, I do still have 12 years to go to catch up with her. Zuchini and new potatoes are rolling in!
I love those chairs!
