by pam kueber on September 4, 2008

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for this incredible 1957 Dallas time capsule sent in by flickr friend Tess.

The listing says: “Spectacular one-of-a-kind mid-century modern known as the Round House.

“Truly a work of art beginning with the domed motor court covered in wisteria, the hm offers a mixture of materials rarely seen.

“A rare opportunity to own a masterpiece of architecture that has only had 3 owners.

“The myriad of noteworthy details includes a sweeping double-lined copper FP with 2′ airspace; Italian-glass mosaic, mosaic murals.”

What do you think? I’m definitely in!

That courtyard is simply breathtaking. I can only imagine what it must look like when the wisteria is blooming!!!

Phenomenal. What a flight of fancy. This is what can happen when an architect has an inspired vision and a builder is found who can materialize that vision. Is this house on the market? If the architect is still alive, or the builder is still around, Pam, you should somehow contact them and ask them to comment on their work. I’m sure other RetroRenovation readers would be interested in reading about that.

Thanks, Bill, for the idea – I will check into it. And yes, I should have mentioned, this house can be yours for $995,000. “Flight of fancy” — PERFECT way to describe this.

Oh boy do I need to start making a lot more money.

Well, along with the $995,000 price tag, you are going to have to spend some cash on a new wardrobe to live in this fantastic place. Maybe something Star Trekkie? I would really want to feel worthy of living in this amazing place.

This house was in disrepair for years and we used to sneak in as kids because one door was unlocked and it was empty. It is even trippier in person. I always try to make a pilgrimage when the wisteria is in bloom, it’s incredible year after year. The last people who owned it restored it well. I live about 5 minutes away and probably have more photos or would be glad to run by and take any extra photos you might want. It’s hard to capture just how magnificent the wisteria is. Plus there’s a water element throughout, I seem to remember you have to walk over a little waterway to reach the front door. And you can see inside the pool if you’re in the downstairs tiki basement. Several of the walls are suspended mahogany with backlighting… lots of little mosaic steps and details inside and out. The link above to the Dallas Morning News shows it the best.

It was commissioned by Eddie Parker and the architect was Bruce Goff. I think it took 5-6 years to build. I was glad to see it here!
