1963 midcentury time capsule contemporary in Des Moines

Thanks to reader Shawna for this week’s 1963 time capsule home.

Another beauty from Des Moines.

First time ever on the market, and with a sauna!

Thank you, Shawna!!

Hi Pam!

Love the blog. It’s been a great resource for us. We recently purchased a 1958 one-owner blond brick ranch, and love the ideas shared here.

I really enjoy when you share retro home listings. Here’s a local home built in 1963 that I thought you might appreciate.

Here’s the complete listing.

  1. This is a great house, but it has sat on the market for a really long time because the price (!) and taxes make it a huge leap for most people. In DSM, you can build a huge house for about $200,000 less out in the burbs and get a 10-year tax abatement and suburb property taxes after that. The property taxes in the city are a joke. It’s a shame.

what a great time-capsule…Pam, all of these photos and links you share really help while formulating our plan of attack for sprucing and furnishing!
Two things: 1. did you notice the giraffe in the backyard? 2. did you notice the floor in the dining room…is their moss between the tile or that an armstrong floor?

Hi sleeping bee, aka Alice — I think that’s rug in the dining room, orange blocks with a green grid? Giraffe? Where? Giraffes in Iowa!

Okay, now I’m seriously wasting time, looking for a giraffe in a photo…. But I did notice this time around that they have the same ceiling fan we bought from Home Depot a few months back. It’s the silver modern-looking one in the room with the colorful barrel chairs. We just bought two more for our new place because it’s hard to find anything simple, modern, retro-looking that doesn’t cost a fortune. They don’t have strong lights, but the fans are great. Though my husband was told that the manufacturer isn’t making the brushed-nickel finish anymore, in favor of a wood tone, I think.

Still wasting time (since I’m supposed to be unpacking and job-hunting), I found the damn giraffe, on the complete listing on the realtor’s website, one of the exterior photos. Pretty impressive estate! Though I sure would like to see what the kitchen looked like before they remodeled it….

I have a starter home built in 1955 and furnished the same in turquoise and pinks in the kitchen, living room and funishing to match.
