Kitchens – Countertops

Arborite has two new laminates in their 2011-2012 collection that just popped onto my radar. I haven’t seen these as actual samples yet — I’ll order them this week. Meanwhile, I wanted to put them out there, because I know that many Retro Renovators have been left kind of up a creek since Formica discontinued [...]

Over at her blog The Home Project, reader Linn and her husband continue to chronicle the remodel of their adorable bungalow kitchen. Recently, they rolled up their sleeves and installed a stainless steel countertop right over the old, existing laminate countertops. The headline: When first considering the stainless steel countertop option, Linn contacted a big [...]

A reader wrote to ask how to bring the luster back to her vintage laminate countertops. Paste wax, maybe? To get the answer, I turned to expert Grace Jeffers. She is the writer, design historian and materials expert responsible for restoration of the Ralph Sr. and Sunny Wilson House – including its gorgeous Mondrian-style kitchen, [...]

Where to find speckled gold laminate? Also called “lame” (with an accent on the “e”, as in “lam-ae.”) A typical reader question, like this one: Hello – I really hope you can help me. I have been searching for weeks with no luck. I have an old trailer from the 50′s and need to replace [...]

Another first for the blog and our Retro Renovation journey: Last night I spotted vintage Geneva steel kitchen cabinets in a Target commercial. Don’t they look fantastic! Continue on for the close-up and more play-by-play commentary —> I think the countertop is some variety of solid surface material – a very sleek, modern look. And, I’m guessing that [...]

A slide show of 73 pink kitchens
Broyhill Saga furniture line – and showing off with my new slide show!

Hi,
I can’t find the post from the home ec teacher who was going to paint her pink cabinets. Did anyone argue to keep them pink??? Too classic. There are plenty of pinks in fashion these days. The 8th graders would find a lot to love!
Susan, is this the post you are talking about: http://retrorenovation.com/2008/08/21/a-junior-high-in-lawrence-kansas-wants-color-tips-for-their-vintage-geneva-kitchen-cabinets/
Thanks, Pam. And for your “shim” find for me on this link: http://retrorenovation.com/2009/08/25/how-to-make-vintage-metal-cabinets-fit-into-your-kitchen/#more-16201
You are a wonder of retro style AND information management. Are you hiding a library science degree somewhere?
I am in the process of buying a home that has pink laminate kitchen cabinets. My first reaction was “This is terrible!” After more time I am thinking that I should leave them and blend the retro look wth ultra-modern. Can you help?
hi Jay, send me some pics – although i will forewarn, i do not know when i can potentially feature your kitchen as i am way way behind with reader posts. send pics to retrorenovation [at] gmail [dot] com
Our house was built in 1940, and after several paint jobs, I’ve decided a light rosy pink would be idea to go with the grey counter and white cabinets. Any recommendations for paint color? Thanks.
Ziva, both Sherwin Williams and California Paints have historically accurate palettes. You can see all my Paint stories in the navigation – Under Decorating, I recall.
So, I took the plunge. I painted my greige kitchen (done so by the last owners before I bought the house) to “flamingo pink”. I got the color by matching a pink hamper I picked up at the Goodwill. Anyway, I finally have a pink kitchen! And… I have vintage barkcloth that I will turn into curtains soon. I painted and then realized they were the perfect match! The decorating gods where with me today!
yay! send me pics when you are ready for prime time!
