Pink GE metal kitchen cabinets in Indiana – Reader Ron is starting to assemble collections for us all to buy!

by pam kueber on November 17, 2008

Speedway Ron and I have become great online friends. He really knows his stuff when it comes to vintage steel cabinets.

He has collected this large and wonderful set of pink GE cabinets WITH appliances, and has them for sale for $3,000. Folks, kitchens like this do not come around often, this is a great deal! In Indianapolis.

Ron reports:

This is the single largest vintage kitchen I’ve had yet.  It came out of a mansion in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  It’s got a ton of neat little features like a built in flour sifter and rack in one of the drawers, am radio in one of the cabinets, sound mounted flip up counter tops on the end pieces, and pull out and flip up drawers in another cabinet.  It was pretty state of art at the time, and still so today.  Other than a microwave oven, there really is nothing today that is better than what these folks enjoyed in the late 50’s and early 60’s.  The kitchen has a dishwasher, wall mounted refrigerators and freezer that look like cabinets, a stainless steel range hood and fan, a combination washer/dryer for cleaning napkins and tablecloths right in the kitchen, and more.  The ovens are a super nice Frigidaire Imperial Flaire range with pull out burners and rotisserie and also a GE wall mounted oven.  I didn’t get a floor standing refrigerator but originally there was another besides the wall mounted cabinet units.  I do have a few of them of course, including a very rare Crosley with a door-front ice water dispenser.

Here are some pictures. It’s a very nice, HUGE original set with nearly 20 cabinets in matching pink.

Ron

Hi Ron,
I am EXTREMELY interested in Ron’s obsession :) I will be building a new house in spring of 2010 and want more than anything to be able to put in pink, aqua or white metal kitchen cabinets instead of those prefab dull and predictable wood cabinets. I have been obsessed with anything 50’s most of my life and I finally found a wonderful man who shares my love of this time period (we are getting married right after we move into the new house :) )
Ron, any help you can give with finding our dream kitchen would be absolutely wonderful.
I would love to talk to you about your project :)
You can email me directly as katvt@msn.com
To anyone out there who would like to do a major good deed any help you can give to make our dream come true would be a friend for life!
Thanks,
Kat

The oven we had growing up was that oven and the bottom was white not pink, It lasted until the 1980’s, I wish we still has it, I LOVE that stove soooooo much!

Ron, that is an amazing collection. Thanks for posting the photos. I am trying to finish updating my kitchen which has pink GE cabinets like those and have one cabinet that doesn’t shut. The little piece that clicks into the cabinet door when you shut it has broken off. Have you ever come across this? Any ideas of what I might be able to put in there that would work? Thanks, Nancy.

I’m in love with that Flair. Now, how can we get it to Atlanta?

Reader Ron! How close are you? I am in Ravenna, Ohio and have quite the collection myself. The count is now 4 stoves and 5 sinks (including the ones I am using in my kitchen). I also have boxes and boxes of 4″ pink tile (that I would gladly trade for some marble windowsills), mid-40’s free-standing cabinets, and a few other pieces parts that I plan to sell. I dream of having a 50’s retro shop and a diner where I dress in 50’s housewife attire and serve food all day, but I don’t think I dare quit my day job! I have the day off today, so I suppose I should be posting pics in the forum. Or should I continue painting my cabinets pink? Hmmm… maybe I will just shop online all day and accomplish nothing. You can find me on myspace or flickr as karmi_woolfe to see pics of my projects. Hopefully, I can help some readers complete their collections too!

karmi – I would be interested in a sample of one of your pink tiles…I have a pink bathroom to which I would like to add more pink tile (ceiling etc – per a photo that was recently posted on Pam’s site). Could you ask Pam to send me your email or Pam could you send her my email? Thanks,

Yesterday I was watching the kitchen renovation show on HGTV, Spice Up My Kitchen and I watched in Horror as they…(to quote the program guide.)

“Even June Cleaver would say this kitchen is dysfuctional. Blue-green metal cabinets don’t provide enough storage, old appliances are inefficient, countertops are easily scratched and the sink is outdated and rusty. With cherry cabinets, granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances and a new tile floor, this 1950s kitchen gets some much-needed, modern-day elegance.”

The kitchen cabinets and countertops looked to be in pristine condition too. They then made it worse when they dumped them in a roll-off.

You think a so-called ‘Kitchen Designer’ would know that these cabinets are collectible.

I have been looking for a wall monted refriderator.Does anybody have ideas on where to look?

Susan June 5, 2009 at 8:35 pm

My mom’s rental home has vintage GE metal cabinets. They used to be pink, but have been painted several times. They need redone, but the other problem is two of the cabinet handles are missing. Do you know where we can find some or what a good alternative would be. Also, are there good alternatives to simply changing out the doors.

pam kueber June 5, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Sorry, Susan, I don’t know the answer to either of these questions.
