• Broyhill Saga furniture line – and showing off with my new slide show!

Everyone wants better slide shows…and many want to see more midcentury furniture lines. Today I accomplish the start of both with my new NextGEN photo gallery tool. So much easier for me to use – so expect more photos and illustration galleries to come! Click on the image to move the show forward – there are 19 images. (Next, I’ll try to figure out how to add arrows.)

Meanwhile – if anyone in the Chicago-Madison-Milwaukee triangle wants Broyhill Saga furniture – Cary is your guy. He has a complete house-full for sale in Beloit and was so kind to send me these many images. There are more, and I’ll try to get them up as soon as I can. This slide show also will be archived and built upon in the new Broyhill Saga page to come. To get the furniture, email: cbackenger@yahoo.com

My in-laws had a set of Broyhill Sculptura, very similar. It seemed to be less ‘space age’ more ethno-aftrican. It was neat, but as often the case, it was takenover by his sister and she painted it all black with Grey and Silver paint for her son. I’ll try to send you pictures. My son got some pictures of his cousin’s room.

      Thank you

    4. Carolyn says:

The chairs look SO similar to the one piece Brasilia chairs- any chance they are the same?

    5. CHRISTOPHER says:

Well, where to begin…First, Carolyn….yes, I am almost 100% certain they were designed by the same person (Brasilia AND Emphasis AND Forward 70 lines)as the dining tables are identical as well as most of the legs and the basics of the case pieces–doors and moldings/trim are changed. Also there is another set of chairs for the SAGA set that look identical to the door moldings on the Brasilia line.

Next…from what research I have done (my grandfather sold this stuff in the 50′s and 60′s—and I am obsessed).
The SAGA was created before –late 50′s to like 1963 (a guess) and possibly at the same time as the Brasilia and Emphasis lines.

My grand parents had a small china hutch and a drop eaf table and 7 (odd ?) chairs…and about 6 extra leaves (extras from grandpas store no doubt–still in the box!). And they had the Triple dresser (as pictured) a king headboard–bookcase, and the chest wth a night stand.

Well, to make a long story longer, I have their table and chairs, but it just wasn’t enough…I now have a huge breakfron–like the one pictured, a buffet, and a huge room divider….All found for under 200.00–on ebay or antique malls/retro stores. I bought a double dresser from a friend who sells vintage furniture, and the full flat headboard from another dealer friend, and just yesterday one of my dearest friends/neighbors passed away and she had the double dresser, chest (as pictured) and the bed and night stand. Well, I lucked out and her husband wanted to get rid of the dresser and chest…so he sold it to me for 200.00 total….

If yu check on ebay, someone is selling an original ad, I have the room divider pictured…I also have all the oriinal books, but my scnner is down, so I will post later…
MOOSKI:TALK YOUR SISTER-IN-LAW OUT OF IT AND STRIP IT, IT’LL BE WORTH IT! ALL THE LINES ARE MADE OF PECAN AND WALNUT VENEERS.
EVERYONE: KEEP LOOKING, IT IS OUT THERE, AND MOSTLY UNDER 200.00. YOU CAN MIX MOST OF THE MENTIONED LINES AND NO ONE WILL KNOW…!!!! I DO INTERIOR DESIGN WORK AND HAVE USED BOTH BRASILIA AND SAGA IN THE SAM ROOMS, SO IT CAN BE DONE!!! (NO ONE WILL KNOW, AND ALL OF THESE SETS HAVE SO MANY PIECES, YOU MAY LIKE SOME BETTER THAN OTHERS)

Now, I need the night stand…..

      ENJOY!!!!! CHRIS

    6. Carolyn says:

Chris- thanks for the confirmation on the chairs- I have 4 of the single back chairs to go w/ the Brasilia buffet and china cabinet in our dining room- we have a tables and 6 other chairs that are very similar to the Broyhill stuff, but are slightly different and I would love to replace them w/ more of the saga/brasilia chairs. Knowing to search for both Saga and Brasilia definitely helps my search!

    7. CHRISTOPHER says:

      CAROLYN: NO PROBLEM…I SEE MY SPELLING/SPELL CHECK WASN’T WORKING….LOL
ABOUT THE CHAIRS, THE SAGA LINE HAD A SET OF CHAIRS WITH A DOGBONE SHAPE (VERY MUCH LIKE SOME PAUL MCCOBB CHAIRS).

ALL OF THE CHAIRS, INCLUDING SAGA, BRASILIA, EMPHASIS AND FORWARD 70 ARE INTERCHANGEABLE.

GOOD LUCK, NOW SOMEONE GET ME A NIGHT STAND OR 2 :P

    8. CHRISTOPHER says:

yay! I JUST SCORED THE NIGHTSTAND FOR 30.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT CAN BE DONE!

    9. Rick says:

So i think i just bought a kitchen set buffet china hutch and a little cabinet and table and six chairs two of which being captains chairs at an estate sale! Seen and loved it but they wanted lol $600 for it all so i ended up getting it for $295 the last day of the sale! was that a good deal? And the other thing i was said about they had the coffee table and two end stands that matched but someone bought them the day before! :-( however it is all in really good shape! but the table i am guessing came with two leaves as there is a custom cover to it with two leave sections! i would like to find the leafs to this set! and help would be greatly apprecitated and i do have some good pics of it all just not sure how to post them! so any help would be greatly appreciated and do i know if it is saga or brasilia? pretty sure its saga but not positive?

    10. CHRISTOPHER says:

    11. Noreen says:

I have china hutch that sets on top of a buffet in the Broyhill Emphasis line that I will give to someone. It is walnut and is plain and can match Brasilia or Emphasis. Email me at noreenedoyle@gmail.com

    12. elisa says:

      Hello all,
I have the Emphasis hutch, I purchased it about 4 years ago for $30. Yes, $30 bucks! However, I need a new lower drawer pull, someone must have broken it when moving it a while back before I owned it. If anyone has ideas where i might find one let me know. Im also looking to add a dining table and chairs to my collection if anyone hears or see anything in the philadelphia area….

      • Tom says:

Elisa — I realize it’s a year later, but did you ever find a replacement drawer pull for the Emphasis hutch? I’m in the same position — 2 of 3 handles broken on a credenza. If you didn’t find a replacement, did you come up with a different solution? Thanks.

      • Ginger Myslinski says:

Hello Elisa: I realize that it’s been some time since you posted your comment but I wanted to know if you’re still interested in the Broyhill Premier Emphasis Dining Room? My mom passed away last year so we are looking to sell her beautiful 10 piece Broyhill Premier Emphasis dining room furniture (Large table with leaves and table pad, Buffet, lighted Breakfront China Cabinet and 6 dining chairs).

All pieces are in great shape, i.e., the dining table always had the table pad on it so there are no scratches of any kind on it. One of the drawers to the china cabinet is alittle hard to close but with alittle TLC, I’m sure it could be made to feel like new!!

We live in the Northeast section of Philadelphia so the location is perfect! Please reply to this post if you’re interested in this beautiful set!!

    13. Paul says:

So I just picked up a Saga china cabinet/breakfront on Craigslist and LOVE IT. I will keep scouring the Minneapolis area for additional pieces speciffically the dining room table and dog bone chairs and any of the bedroom furniture. I have never been into vintage furniture but this line is so perfect in terms of lines and size and those awesome little star bursts.

    14. Jason says:

      Pam and Friends!

I hate to post to an old thread, I also commented on today’s post.

I’m so excited I have a Saga dining set coming my way; 6 chairs, table with leaf and hutch. I got it all for $200 after I bargained! I’m thrilled, the lady is even refinishing the top as she had started to strip the finish on the top which was damaged.

I also got another glass door hutch last night for $30, but it has no markings and is not recognizable to me, it’s just mid century style. I need them both to display my American Fostoria!

Now that I’ve seen the Saga in person I think it may be what my Great Aunt had in her dining room.

I may try to find or have made an extra leaf and then add upholstered chairs at the end for 8 person seating. So excited!

My Mom gave me a nice set of hers when I bought the house, but it’s very light wood and I always dreaded the thought of re-staining it. Now I won’t have to, although I wish I hadn’t had my living room side chairs’ legs finished in mahogany to match my Corona Sofa legs, because it appears as I had more mid century furniture it will be more like walnut. I bought the chairs because of their midcentury flavor, but I guess mixing wood tones is ok.
