Quickly after World War II ended, Americans plowed right into making a wonderful new life for themselves – starting with building their dream kitchens, dream bathrooms – dream houses. Looking at periodicals from 1946, I can see a few distinct trends – this was a transitional period…you still see many Deco influences…you see a lot of primary colors…and definitely, interiors were “sweet”, although in ’46 homeowners certainly would have declared them “modern.” Read on for ideas from each of six great interiors, including a bathroom, two living rooms and a bedroom. 1946 was a very good year! Are you as interested in all the little details for your mid century home as I am? How about these plastic, crystal-cut hangers for your clothes closet? I’ve picked up many of these at estate sales, and I’m sure they have been around a long time. But, you can also still buy them new, and at reasonable prices. A four-pack of dress or shirt hangers is just $1.99, while two suit hangers with clips (like above) go for $2.29 at acehardwareoutlets.. Shop around online – I’ve also seen them in large packs that bring the unit prices down further.

With the growing popularity of all things retro, it’s great to see more manufacturers bringing authentic reproductions back to life. Case in point: Rejuvenation – long known for it Arts & Crafts, Colonial Revival, and Deco-era reproductions – introduced its first off-shoot brand “Satellite” last year.

I am super fascinated by the archaic features and fixtures of midcentury houses…. Things that have been superseded by something more modern, or which simply faded from fashion. Quick! We better get them on the blog fast, so’s we don’t forget them. Stuff like hudee rings, and push-button plumbing, and appliance centers, and today: Dovecotes [...]

A PLANTER MOLDED RIGHT INTO A TOILET TANK LID? Well, this is a new one to me… found in this ad for a 1964 Eljer Estate toilet. And of course – LOVE it. Has anyone ever seen this? Let’s all be on the lookout. Like spotting rare and endangered species in the (retro)Amazon. Carry your [...]

Look at this woddity (“wonderful oddity”) from Historic House Parts: A vintage porcelian on steel (I’m guessing) kitchen sink with one square bowl and one round bowl. Ain’t life grand? HHP says this is from “Ebco”… the sink is 38″x20″ overall, with the round bowl somewhat shallower (7.5″ D) than the square. Sounds like there are some [...]

Longtime readers will recall my fixation with 50s and 60s electric plug-in devices to organize all the wonderful wife-saving appliances on the top of your kitchen countertop. Remember these previous posts?: Happy birthday to me – my Sunbeam birthday present! And this Westinghouse model. This time around — a whole cabinet! Yummy! Anyone have one [...]
