Kitchens – Countertops

Here is another set of products from the past — still available today — with a fascinating history: ‘Memphis’ style laminates designed in 1978 by Ettore Sottsass, “the greatest Italian designer of the last half century.” These laminates are still offered by Abet Laminati. This is not necessarily a name familiar U.S. consumers, but Abet [...]

So here is a little piece of trim made to fit between the edge of your countertop and the edge of your stove, to prevent all manner of food from dropping down between. Hmmm, a handy dandy that I didn’t even know I needed, but which I am pretty sure would make DH, a neat freak, very happy. [...]
Wowza — here is a ton — several tons, actually! — of vintage Consoweld laminate likely to come on the market soon. I never cease to be amazed at the retro treasures out there, yet to be unearthed. Interestingly, this seller first posted this on our Forum — but then got so much interest, put [...]

UPDATE (Oct 2011): Click over to –> this story to get an update on all three sources for boomerang laminate. Where to find a retro Formica countertop for a red, black and white kitchen? Pamela recently wrote to ask: Hi! I bought a home a couple of years ago … it’s a 10-year-old FL ranch, [...]

I’ve written before about mixing countertop surfaces in your 40s 50s or 60s kitchen. But I recently came across these great photos and thought they would be very helpful. The photos show: How to lower cabinetry to create a place to roll out your pie dough (of course). Put a slab of marble here — [...]

Wow…love those scalloped edges. Sooo cool…
I’d love to have such a countertop in my kitchen! where did you buy it?
Lucky, read closely and you will see – this is a photo from an estate sale and the countertop is very old. Available resources to try and replicate this look today are on this Fast & Easy page:http://retrorenovation.com/retro-laminates/
Hi Pam,
I actually have this kitchen in a current rental home and I am wondering if you have any tips on how to clean it. There were a couple stains when we moved in and I’d like to make sure it’s clean before we move out. Any tips?
Also, since you know all about the home–I’ve been googling and I can’t figure out what this countertop actually is. You call it linoleum–is that different from laminate, and from formica?
Thanks so much for your help!
Adrienne
Hi Adrienne, the post where I featured this kitchen is here, in case you are looking for it: http://retrorenovation.com/2009/02/25/1960s-vintage-woven-wood-shades-and-an-amazing-hollywood-regency-time-capsule/ … Regarding these floors, my recommendation to readers is to have a professional look at them and make sure you know what is really in them. Old flooring can contain asbestos – and if so, you want to educate yourself about what you have and make informed decisions about how to handle. See my many links on this site (including in the sidebar on every page) regarding the EPA’s website as one place to start for information. Once you know what is in the floor, you can then find out how to maintain it. Regarding countertops — as far as I know companies used linoleum, then laminate (plastic – like Formica.) If the stuff is really old, I would advise to have it tested as well to know what you are really working with. One place you might start to find an expert who can tell you: Your local building inspector? Good luck, Pam
