Regarding these floors, my recommendation to readers is to have a professional look at them and make sure you know what is really in them. Old flooring can contain asbestos - and if so, you want to educate yourself about what you have and make informed decisions about how to handle. See my many links on this site (including in the sidebar on every page) regarding the EPA's website as one place to start for information. Once you know what is in the floor, you can then find out how to maintain it. Regarding countertops -- as far as I know companies used linoleum, then laminate (plastic - like Formica.) If the stuff is really old, I would advise to have it tested as well to know what you are really working with. One place you might start to find an expert who can tell you: Your local building inspector?
