SHAUN SPOTTED THIS WONDERFUL TIME CAPSULE, a 1953 home built by architect Eugene Kinn Choy in the Los Angeles foothills. The house, which is currently for sale, is large and expensive by most standards, but even so, I think that there are a lot of design touches on the interior that provide ideas for a retro renovation on any budget. In fact, the more that I look at this house, the more that I love its unpretentiousness. The new American dream, perhaps?
The house has four full bathrooms. All are quite beautiful … featuring, for example, colorful tile and ornamental lattice work … and appear to be original. For this post I’ve spotlighted them. Thanks to real estate agent Jeffrey Young for giving me permission to use the images — and please do check out his complete website about this hous for sale, and featuring 40 images in all. For example, you also will not want to miss the Western Holly double ovens…and catch the Eames womb-sofa and chairs in one of the many rooms overlooking the pool. As Shaun says, ” I love and hope will be preserved by the new owners (whoever ends up buying it).” Thank you, Shaun!

Amazing and I love all the natural wood tones throughout the house. Feels very earthy. I assume it must be selling for well over a million!!

WOW!
This is one of the best interiors I have seen in awhile! I WANT THOSE BATHROOM SINK FIXTURES!
P.S. I had the fortune of finding a number of great mid-century interior and entertaining books this past weekend; I’d love to scan some images for you…I even found an original Dorothy Draper “Entertaining is FUN!” hardcover with dust jacket for $8!
These are the sexiest bathrooms I’ve ever seen.
So gorgeous. Love the images of the backyard, and I’m really into the divider things lately, not sure what they are called but they are very geometric with intersection squares and rectangles, lots of them in this house!
Anita, I think the official name is “divider thingy’s”.
SWOOOOON!
LOVE IT! I love the spot of orange/red in every room! It’s there, whether its a chair or a ceramic pot or a graphic “divider thingy”. lol
Spectacular! This MCM takes my breath away! Especially the “divider thingys”
Has the best “feel” ever! Amazing!!! Nice to see it so well preserved. I’m jealous.
Houses like this one make me want to buy a lottery ticket so if I win, I would buy that house or one like it, and live happily ever after.
I hope the next owner of that wonderful piece of art is worthy of living within those incredible designs.
That is awesome! I think the main photo of the bathroom with it’s orange wall divider is my favourite!
I spotted some Knoll chairs in that amazing house. Years ago I worked in Knoll’s marketing dept and could have gotten them at a huge discount….why oh why wasn’t I into retro back then?? Youth!……..
Oh how this home makes me feel like dancing a jig!
Divider thingy it is then! (I want one…or two)
Oh, the parties you could have in this house! We need to start a fund (anyone have a rich uncle??) to snap up these houses and take turns staying in them!
If it was any better I couldn’t stand it!
I used to walk my dog past this house and ogle the outside. The inside is sooooooo much better! I am in love.
OK, the new quest is: Where can we find divider thingies these days?
Femme1… I’m with you, I’m thinking I’m going to have to figure out how to make my own divider thingies…..
I am so glad you posted this. I think you posted this on Twitter and I just loved it! But, then I forgot who posted it. There are so many good ideas in these pics for our restoration. Someone took such good care of this house. And, like everyone else, I love the room dividers!
Very Nice!!!
Oh why didn’t I win powerball yesterday! I’d be packing my bags and heading to L.A. in a heart beat to buy this beauty. It’s the perfect house in every way.Whomever buys this treasure will be a very lucky soul.
Why oh why can I not find a place like this in Australia. Sigh. It is all too wonderful.
I just emailed everyone I know, and asked for all their money for a good cause. Making me sublimely happy! This house is wonderful!
OH the house is SOLD, The new owners totally get the house, and will keep the glory of shinning !
I want to marry that house. Do you think the new owners would mind?
Denim Bunny, I am sure the new owners wouldn’t mind at all. It’s all about the love, baby.
that house is sooo outta control! =) i love it.
Does anyone know about the green stone tiles in the entryway? We have what looks like the same material in the 1954 house we bought this fall.
I just stumbled across this post. I went to a party in this house on my first date with my (now former) boyfriend of the last 3 years. We sat right on those white sofas. I remember the mirror behind the buffet, the amazing cozy kitchen, and of course the sliding glass wall, pool and pool house, which are magnificently lit at night. Seeing the photos makes me wish I’d been nosy and checked out the bathrooms!
