We are literally in window hell! Our 1948 Dallas, TX ranch style has a ton of windows-one of the reasons I fell in love with the house. It has so many retro features and the windows give our "face" such charm. They are steel true casement, divided light windows and if they ever had storm windows I sure can't figure out how! The hinge for the crank is locate outside the window making it impossible to apply any weather/storm windows to the outside of the house. Our windows sweat all winter long and I am constantly battling mildew and moisture. Plus, they are drafty. My husband, who is an architect, wants to replace all the windows in the house with vinyl. Makes me feel faint just to consider it. I've looked at so many older homes whose windows were replaced with vinyl or aluminum, and I just can't see this on our house. I think all the charm would be lost on the outside not to mention the inches we will lose on our wonderful woodland creek view.

Any suggestions would be so welcome. Is there an online window repair or construction class? I just feel we are missing some knowledge that may help us out...and save me from vinyl windows. Help?!

The National Park Service provide technical information as it relates to historic properties. They are called Preservation Briefs. Here's a preservation brief providing professional advice on the repair of historic steel windows, Preservation Brief #13.
