It must have been used outside as well, as one of the trays had rusted and my husband welded it back together for me. (He machinist and has a welder.) I dry-brushed some off-white paint over the bricks around our fireplace because it was so dark and grungy. I left some of the brick surface showing through. The result is sort of cheesy, like something from the 80s, but, it's better than the grungy bricks. We love our exterior brick, which looks like its 200 years old, even though the house was built in 1959. No plans to paint over it! Painted brick can look really good. Yes, the watermelons are wooden so we can enjoy them each year. We finally had to give up & paint the fireplace white. We tried everything to clean it but had no luck. We are happy w/ the painted brick, as you saw we have painted brick in the entry hall. The exterior has always been yellow. Nancy Thank you.
