Following yesterday’s post on Saul Steinberg’s wonderful “Views of Paris” wallpaper, which was designed in 1946 and still is available today, I started nosing around some more on Schumacher’s website. I found more designs for wallpaper and/or fabrics all reproduced from the 1950s originals. Amazing! Gorgeous! Gonna cost you! I think the one above — “Trains” wallpaper by Saul Steinberg for Schumacher — also might have some appeal to our steampunk kin. Note, the Schumacher page for this print does not identify it as a Steinberg design. But, I found a reference to it in another listing. But now I want to know: What happened to “Horses”?
“Aviary” wallpaper designed by Saul Steinberg and sold by Schumacher. This is also available in a black-on-white print and as a fabric.
“Opera” fabric, designed by Saul Steinberg, for Schumacher. Discovered in the archives as an original Greeff print.

Thanks for these, they are wonderful. I secretly want the birds for a wall in my bath but know the adult kids will think it is time for ole mom not to have any sharp objects on site. Also still hoping to find a black and white Don Quixote/Picasso wallpaper seen about ten years ago. Also a stylized San Francisco Victorian house and tree (which I had 43 years ago.) I shall hang in there a bit longer.
be well, enjoy, f

I wonder how muche the aviary wallpaper should be for a whole room. They don’t want to tell the price unless you register and be approved!

The wallpaper/fabric illustrated above, entitled “New York New York,” is not by Saul Steinberg. It was erroneously attributed to Steinberg by Schumacher in 2003, but removed when The Saul Steinberg Foundation informed Schumacher of the error.

Thank you, Sheila, for that clarification! Whose is it?
Sheila Schwartz says
The Foundation doesn’t know who the artist was. All such records would be at Schumacher. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

The Steinberg wallpaper and fabrics were actually originally part of the Patterson-Piazza company. Decorators Walk, a fabric and furnishings company to the trade and based in NYC bought PP in the 1970’s. The Steinberg patterns sold consistantly well up until the time that Schumacher bought Decorators Walk and their archives in 2002. A testament to their classic appeal. Schumacher bought Greeff several years prior to that, but the Steinberg prints were not part of Greeff’s archives. I was VP Design for Decorators Walk and Design Director for the DW division of Schumacher. I was also a Greeff designer in the 1970’s.

I love the aqua Opera especially! They all are great, and love the cartoony styling it reminds me so much of the 60s and the Pink Panther cartoons.

The Aviary wallpaper was in the bathroom of a neighbor when I was growing up. Great memories of her house.
