Vintage shuffleboard collectibles

Today’s history lesson: St. Petersburg, Fla., was and is the shuffleboard capital of the world. Disclosure: Anything that you buy — from these ebay carousels or otherwise – when you click into ebay via any link on my site nets me a teensy commission; thanks for your support.

I did not know that!! My grandpa built a house in St. Petersburg in the 50s for his retirement and we spent every month of July down there while I was growing up (my dad was a teacher and had summers off). My grandpa played shuffle board and used to take us to play sometimes. I just thought it was what every did back then. Little did I know St. Pete was the capital! LOL

My parents still live in that same house. It hasn’t been remodeled in all these years – still the same tiled bathrooms and kitchen. I wish I had some of my grandma’s furniture from the 50s/60s though. I remember she had some nice rattan stuff.

I just got back from a week in St. Pete Beach, FL. The motel, The Bon Aire, still has active shuffle board courts … and teenagers were using them! It was a very retro moment for me. Fun to learn a bit of the area’s history :)

If I can ask, how did you like the Bon Aire in St. Pete Beach? Retro? Clean? Planning a trip there in a few weeks. Thanks!

Everyone should watch the movie Cocoon! There is a great shuffleboard scene in that movie and it’s at Mirror Lake in St. Petersburg.

A little late on commenting, but my fiancee and I had our engagement photos taken at the St. Pete Shuffleboard Club. It’s an awesome place, and good to know that people still use them. The Shuffleboard Club is also owned by the city, so it’s completely open to the public.

(PS – I took a few photos while I was there with my old TLR camera – the link on my name should take you my Flickr page).
