Update Tuesday morning: I’ve picked a winner, but I’ll leave Comments open in case more folks want to pipe in with ideas for me to work on… Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions, I’ll see what I can do! Stacy was the April winner of our monthly “Love the House You’re In” custom collage made by Mel Kolstad. Another beautiful collage, Mel. Woof! Meow! Readers — this month’s contest will end on Tuesday morning just as soon as I get to my computer, so click on through for this month’s question — and you could win a piece of artwork commemorating your own little castle. Jeez, I need to win my own contest and get one of my house!
To win our May contest:
Leave a Comment answering the question, “What else should Pam write about on the blog? Or, What would you like to read/see more of?” Please read all the rules here before entering, they all apply.
Look at Stacy’s beautiful house! When I was re-creating it for her in the collage, I could almost hear the birds singing and those peaceful “woods sounds”. Her house just feels like one of those homes that would be so comfortable and relaxing on a warm spring day, hanging out on the rooftop terrace.
Thank you, Mel. You can experience more of Mel’s world at her blog: Ephemeraology

Hi! I’d love to hear about how to disguise your modern TV. I once read an article in the LA Times about a guy who made wooden boxes on legs to mimic the outside of vintage televisions. You just placed your TV inside and–instant time warp!
Of course i remember this wooden box was extremely expensive, but I bet other people out there also have creative ideas for masking TVs (and other modern appliances).

Pam,
I love your site, check it out every day!
I would love to read more about other readers and your “conflict” in updating the original features vs figuring out a way to use the old features…for example…my main bathroom has no shower (basement does)…do I put one in or keep it as just a tub…Or the kitchen has really yucky formica countertops that must come out…do I put more formica down or dare I say a granite? I really want to keep the vintage aspects of my 1961 modest ranch but some of the original features are just old, damaged and just plain gross! I know my renovating process has been slowed by these sort of conflicts. I am always looking for info on how people get past this, so these types of updates would be great….also budget ideas-mid century modern comes at a price for some things!!

Oh! So excited for another opportunity to win one of Mel’s incredible collages.
I’ve loved everything on this blog – i think one of my favorite things is sharing vintage finds. I’d also love to see more color choices – how to recreate paint colors for each decade. We just bought a 1910 bungalow – so decorating ideas for slightly earlier than the 50s would be welcome.

I too love this collage! What a fabulous keepsake.
I agree with the need for retro patios, landscaping and other outdoor ideas

I would love anything about renovating vintage trailers!

I, too, would love to see a feature of vintage trailers…so much fun to kitsch-out. We have a 1958 trailer, loaded with original pink appliances/fixtures, starbursts, asbestos tile, etc., and would be more than wiling to humbly submit “The Love Shack” as an example.
Shelly in PHX says
*willing*, that is…

Hi Pam & Mel,
you’re both great at what you do! Love that collage!
My suggestion is to keep doing what you’re already doing, of course, but to write/edit/produce retro renovation shows for HGTV or the Learning channel so we can follow along on the transformation and get your input from yet another medium. To my knowledge there’s nothing like that on tv and I bet there are viewers who would be interested.

I love the collage!
I agree with the other comments that some landscaping posts would be timely. I would also really appreciate more information on different types of artwork that work well in a mid-century “sort-of-modern-sort-of traditional” home (and where to find it!)
One other topic (but it might be too specific) is Masonite modular walls…how people used them in the past, whether or not to paint them, if people are still using them. Our kids bedrooms are constructed out of them and I’d love more information.

Love this blog! I have gained so many ideas and sourses for product. Thanks Pam!
I would love to see a forum that enables renovators from specific areas to share where to find items for renovation. I recently moved to central PA and have had a hard time locating retro items. More often than not, I just stumble on items – I found my bathroom sink in the back of a pickup truck in a parking lot!
I also like the idea of an option to post before and after pics from readers. Great way to share ideas on colors, products, layouts, etc.
Thanks for asking Pam. Keep up the great work!

How about talking about the front door, entrance to your home? curb appeal. I have a house that faces sideways into a driveway/courtyard instead of the street. The only path to the front door is via the driveway. I’m open to suggestions. Thank you.

Sandy–I love your front door idea as well! That is another item we hope to also update this season. I would love to see examples of accent colors (bright, bold colors to muted color homes) and additional/possibly a second posting of Crestview Doors??? We have looked into Crestview ourselves, but have also considered making our own door….
