Breaking news — You read it here in the blogosphere FIRST! As mid century, vintage and retro style continues to boom in popularity, there are more and more sources of all-new product reproductions. But many of us still love and prefer our “authentic vintage.” The team at Barn Light Electric wants to be able to serve both markets. So in addition to their reproduction lighting, today they launched a new website dedicated to selling authentic vintage lighting from the 20th century – cleaned up and rewired, of course. Stephanie, who is my contact at the company, explains: Heck yeah there is more →
There are days I laugh myself silly as I go prowling all over the internet, probing for the most unlikely places to find new sources of products that are *just* over the rainbow in terms of trendiness today. When I find them, I just laugh laugh laugh, because I know they were trendy ‘back when’ — and that soon, enough, they will be trendy again — although the larger, mainstream design world may not be ready for them just yet. 6 p.m. last night was one of those moments: When I discovered the one-, two-, three-, and, yes, four-bulb configurations for these Early American-esque chandeliers tucked away in the Commercial section of Barn Light Electric’s website. Clearly: Steakhouse chandeliers. And I fell out of my chair, all giggly, because I love them! Heck yeah there is more →
No doubt whatsoever: In the five years that I’ve been doing this blog, the availability of fixtures and hardware and decor to renovate our mid century homes has exploded — and I don’t think it’s near over yet. Things that were rare and expensive are now becoming abundant and inexpensive. Remember, though: You still tend to get what you pay fore. Jon of Jon & Trixi of avocado sink fame and of wanton hacking away at cement board covering vintage laminate countertops fame sends in these latest tips on inexpensive kitchen cabinet knobs and pulls of both the atomic and mid-century modest variety, writing: Heck yeah there is more →

Wow — look at these vintage medicine cabinets — there are three for sale, in all — from a monastery in North Dakota that is undergoing renovation. Thanks, joelaroo, for spotting and posting this vintage loveliness over on our Forum.
Now here is some serous vintage bathroom porn: Satin Glide bathroom vanities, medicine cabinets, shelving – and even a Relaxion Unit to compete with Hall-Mack – all from a 1963 brochure. We see these metal vanities occasionally — I do not know if they really held up well to the humidity in a bathroom. We also see slanted wood vanities like this — like in Chris and Angela’s 1964 bathroom. Heck yeah there is more →
Let’s hear it for well-made, wood kitchens in mid-century homes. There’s virtually no name bigger in wood cabinetry than Wood-Mode. Their website says they have been in business about 60 years — that puts their start right in the heart of the postwar boom. Heck yeah there is more →

Over on the Forum, EmbraceEphemeral spotted and posted this vintage sauna for sale. You know — the old fashioned kind where you get locked in like you’re in a refrigerator, but your head is sticking out. It’s on craiglist in Indianapolis, $95. Hilarious! I’ve started to categorize various “wonderful oddities” — “woddities” — that together we [...]

Here is the latest wonderful oddity — “woddity” — to go into our archive: The Fiesta sink by American Standard. I have seen reference to it as early as 1966. Click on through for some additional, great colors, sculpted round designs (!) and strange lever thingy.

Three consistently desirable accessories for many owners of mid century homes are pole lamps … room dividers … and display shelves. Well, clever reader Carin recently spotted — and nabbed — this interesting thingamabob that combines all three. It’s a room divider that installs like an adjustable, floor-to-ceiling pole lamp … It features working lights in one of the [...]

Longtime readers will recall my fixation with 50s and 60s electric plug-in devices to organize all the wonderful wife-saving appliances on the top of your kitchen countertop. Remember these previous posts?: Happy birthday to me – my Sunbeam birthday present! And this Westinghouse model. This time around — a whole cabinet! Yummy! Anyone have one [...]

Look at this woddity (“wonderful oddity”) from Historic House Parts: A vintage porcelian on steel (I’m guessing) kitchen sink with one square bowl and one round bowl. Ain’t life grand? HHP says this is from “Ebco”… the sink is 38″x20″ overall, with the round bowl somewhat shallower (7.5″ D) than the square. Sounds like there are some [...]
