For many a moon I have pondered: What is the exact technical term for when you lay pieces of streaky VCT floor tiles at 90-degrees to each other. The most common pattern, I am sure, in mid century homes that used this ubiquitous vinyl- or vinyl-asbestos floor tile — similar to the Congoleum VCT available today. I have always thought, there must be one word in the industry that means “lay each tile at 90 degrees to each other” and which is more precise — leaving no confusion about what you’re going to do. So, the other day I got all excited because somewhere someone said this was called “tesselation.” I got to experience tesselation-elation! Heck yeah there is more →
Tesselate… to tessalate… tesselation… not!
1940s House — the BBC retro-reality series

I am not quite sure how, but the other night, trolling around the vintage blogosphere, I spotted a reference to this BBC series — 1940s House — and now I have my DVD set from Amazon on the way. Pretty much every day I get into a conversation with someone about whether “times are worse today than they were for our parents and/or [fill in the blank to any decade past]“. I have my *opinions*, but I have not dug up actual facts to support my own personal hypothesis. Even before I would, though, I’d want to discuss: Heck yeah there is more →
Use a decorative, mid-century living room screen as a headboard
Here is a great idea from the ever-inspirational reader SF Troy. I recently checked in with him to see what has been going on in his Bay Area Eichler home. He said that he’s been very busy riding his bike in fundraisers — yay, Troy! — and only recently has settled back inside to contemplate the next wave of house projects. But he did say he recently visited The Midway Antique Mall in Sacramento, where he purchased this decorative, four-panel mid century screen — which he easily repurposed into a headboard. Brilliant! It looks great behind the bed. Heck yeah there is more →

I am late to the party in playing around with the new etsy.com Treasury tool. I went poking around to catch up on some favorite searches, and put together this selection of vintage towel bars, towel rings and towel holders.
Our Osgood’s Donut Dip Across the Border Adventure
DH and I recently had an adventure. We went to Osgood’s in West Springfield to get firmer cushions for our downstairs man cave sofa. I was extremely cranky regarding the whole trip. I had other things to do. But I had promised DH new cushions as part of his requested Father’s Day gift, so I got in the car anyway. Did I mention I was very cranky? I tortured him mercilessly with my wifely crankiness for a good solid 45 minutes … until our adventure began to decisively unfold. Heck yeah there is more →
