1950s cowboy basement bar — from a house where $45,000 was discovered in the attic — Yeehaw!

vinyl cowboy bar in the basementcowboy theme formica laminateRetro goodness is indeed bountiful in Bountiful, Utah. Reader vintigchik gets snaps for spotting this cowboy themed basement bar for sale and emailing me about it. I reached out to the seller — and in our exchange, he mentioned how this 1950s house had held another treasure: $45,000, which he found in the garage attic right after he bought the house — and which he promptly returned to the original owners’ heirs. Yowza. Is there anything else we really need to know than: Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You. Heck yeah there is more →

Erica’s thrifty jadeite kitchen remodel – 18 photos

vintage jadeite porcelain drainboard sink and metal sink cabineterica, mastermind of the jadeite kitchen renovationErica credits her parents for her love of old things — and for her thrifty ingenuity. They were “restorers and keepers of many … beautiful Victorian buildings,” she says. “Memories of late night trash picking … learning to wallpaper a room at the age of 7, and rescuing tin ceilings from abandoned buildings are all things that have made me the salvager I am today.” So, it’s not surprising (to us) when she also declares, “When looking for a home I was praying not to fall in love with one that had a newly marbleized, stainless steel kitchen that I would have had a hard time tearing out.”

In fact, an 1888 house found its way to Erica… and one of her first major projects was replacing a failing and nondescript particle-board kitchen. Taking a vintage jadeite color drainboard sink and cabinet as her cue, she created a happy kitchen that seems right at home in its 123-year-old skin. Read on for her story, resources, a bathroom renovation too, barkcloth dresses and 17 more photos –>

Mid century designer Beatrice West — and NOS Caloric pink kitchen appliances saved from a trash heap — 16 photos

New Old Stock pink Caloric kitchen appliances found in trash pilebeatrice westReader Nancy recently made an exciting and valuable discovery in a neighbor’s pile set out for the trash man: A set of vintage Caloric kitchen appliances and sink — New Old Stock, still in the original boxes. Including: Built-in oven with warming drawer (?), gas cooktop, splash back, range hood, double-bowl sink, and brochures. Oh: In luminous pink pink pink. Five years into the blog, and I don’t see this too often. Moreover, I became very intrigued when Nancy asked me if I knew anything about Beatrice West, who was credited on one of the boxes for the color styling. I LOVE learning about — and helping to rediscover — once-famous, now forgotten (?) design personalities from the mid-century years. Read on for what I’ve found out about Beatrice West — oh, and see 15 more photos of Nancy’s NOS pink kitchen loveliness — which she is looking to sell.  Heck yeah there is more →

QuakeHold Museum Putty, Gel and Wax — Secure your collectibles on shelves and mantles

putty to stick collectibles to shelvesQuakeHold Museum PuttyIn my recent story about a groovy pole lamp-room divider with built-in shelves, I indicated concern about vases and collectibles getting bumped off the shelves. Demonstrating yet again just how knowledgeable and helpful our readers are, Bungalow Bill — who is an expert in vintage tile — immediately informed us about a product to help stick the vases or collectibles right onto those shelves:

There is a product called ‘Quakehold’, which is a museum putty made to secure objects. It is removable, reusable, and doesn’t harm furniture.

1950s Retro Renovation bathroomtrina in her 1956 kitchenTrina and her husband recently downsized from a 3,000 s.f. contemporary home to a 1,500 s.f. 1956 coolonial. “Life Simplified!”, she says. Yup!
