Update: Entries (comments) on this story are now closed. Congratulations to winners Renee (vase) and Melissa (apron) — I done spun the random number generator, and their number came up. Prizes awarded! Thanks, everyone, for playing — how much fun to read about everyone’s kitchens! Can you believe it, this Savoy vase, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been in continuous production since 1936 — that’s 75 years. Courtesy of sponsor FinnStyle.com, one reader will win this lovely classic vase this week.
And to double the fun, FinnStyle also is offering a second prize for a second reader: a Marimekko apron of your choice. This Kesatori design is my perky favorite — but I count 8 styles of Marimekko aprons, with a total of 14 possible colors. Continue on for instructions on how to enter to win our one of our two giveaways this week –>

Thanks Pam and FinnStyle.

My kitchen is brown, beige and cream 🙁 But I’m working on changing that as fast as possible … I can’t stand to be so “tasteful.”
The front runner new paint color is light apple green — I like yellow kitchens, but the brown rustic tile is not going anywhere soon and yellow is just not working with it (have tried a bunch of shades, but I guess I might keep trying a bit longer). I have white curtains with red trim and little red buttons that make up a scattering of cherries. Probably will paint the cream antiqued cabinets a soft shade of white, but considering a color for the ones that make up the island. Darker green?

Brown is primarily really deep yellow-orange, with some blue in it. Chocolate brown has more blue in it, other shades have more red. Yellow can go well with browns, but you might try warmer and duller/less pure yellows depending on the shade of brown you have. Also, they are both strong colors regardless of shade, and so a 50% 50% mix of yellow and brown might not work well– you probably want a large area of yellow with a smaller area of brown, or vice versa. A few more strong shades will help balance it out as well, if you found a yellow you like.

Wow, since I have attracted the attention of an expert I will be more specific. Here is the kitchen I’ve moved into:
Walls: medium chocolate brown. Actually an attractive color, but probably will change this because we dislike the overall effect of this neutral kitchen.
Cabinets: “French Provincial” look with a finish called “Vanilla Bean Glaze.” Think antique white meets beige. Way too many moldings and fancy beadings on these, but I think that stuff is removable should we decide to paint the cabinets. They are very high quality cabinets, although whoever put them in didn’t put much thought into the layout. Not very efficient for the amount of space available.
Sink: white
Appliances: white except stainless fridge
Window/door molding and pantry door: white. All the moldings are that MDF Victorian-look with the 3 grooves in the flat outside pieces and a square piece with circular inset at each corner (in place of mitered corners)
Floor: rustic looking tile in a pinkish shade of medium to light brown, gray grout.
Counter: pinkish brown granite-look Formica
Backsplash: beige, cream and light brown tile. Looks like stoneware; kinda rough finish. Don’t know what that is called.
Of all the elements in the room I dislike the counter and backsplash the most. The most acceptable but easiest to change is the paint color. The house dates from 1909, but the kitchen addition is newer. I think a 1930s farmhouse look would be perfect and is likely about the right period for the addition that perhaps was a porch before that. Suggestions from anyone most welcome…

My kitchen is a remodel that happened in the late 70’s/early 80’s, so it’s all cream, from the laminate with oak trim cabinets and counters to the appliances. I’m working on a plan to return it to it’s 1953 glory – white, blue and brown. My inspiration photo came from a post you did with specific years attached to kitchen pictures, Pam. Thank you!

Unfortunately, my kitchen walls are currently ‘move-in’ white. Having moved in to our new apartment on three months ago, we can’t wrap our heads around a color ye — although, I would love a terra cotta-ish brown to cozy up the space and compliment the stainless steel appliances and slate counter top.

Our kitchen showcases our Harlequin Fiesta collection and has all the best colors goin’ on. Turquoise, chartreuse… mmmMMmm.

My kitchen is a work in progress. It has pine floors and cabinets with yellow walls. Not sure where it will go from here. There is not enough cabinets and very difficult to fit anything in them. Only time will tell.

We started a major (for us) renovation last April, with walls coming down and everything! Loved losing that wall between the kitchen and dining room. We did the walls in Martha Stewart’s Chopstick yellow. The countertop is Formica’s Aqua Boomerang with brushed aluminum trim, which our countertop guy had only used twice before — in a diner and a nursing home! The cabinets, which were free from a friend doing her own renovation, are nice but boring oak. I’m hoping to paint the wall cabinets white and the base cabinets teal. I think the backsplash will be white subway tile.

My tiny kitchen has the floor tiles like you have, Pam, only a slightly different design but it’s nice. The wall shade is a creamy off white, very warm. The counter top and stove back splash are a charcoal mixed colors granite, the appliances white. I use shades of green (some avocado!) and PINK! It’s a rental, but everything was new when I moved in and it’s very pretty (so no choice in any colors). I would LOOOVE the Lappuliisa apron-I just love the design and the colors are so pretty. Thanks for the opportunity!!! 🙂

My kitchen, which is a work in progress, has black granite counters. I would like to change the cherry stained cabinets to white and add silver accents. Other colors could be brought in for a pop of seasonal contrast.

“What are the colors in your kitchen?”
The walls of my kitchen are a crisp bold yellow and accessorized with red…and don’t forget the brass ceiling fixtures!
