George Carlin on “Stuff”

“Hey, we’ve got more places than we’ve got stuff! We’re gonna have to buy more stuff!” Ummm. Not exactly. I’m going to clean my basement now. Or, as JKaye says in her Comment:

Way too timely for us. We are dealing with our “stuff” this weekend. We put a bunch of stuff in a storage unit when we put the house up for sale back in the summer, to make the place look better. Then Husband’s mother passed away, and we got the task of dealing with a bunch of her stuff. We whittled her stuff down, and put what was left in our storage unit with our stuff. Then we decided to take the house off the market since nothing had happened for months. In the meantime, my mom gave us a few pieces of her stuff. Heck yeah there is more →

A 1950s ranch house with some surprising features — 15 photos

South Boundary Aiken SCpeggyPeggy recently retired from a 23-year career in the military — including stints in Iraq — and now she’s enjoying the good life all shacked up with McDuff, a westie who watches out for her. Peggy bought her 1950s ranch house in an amazingly picturesque area in Aiken, South Carolina, in 2010, when she began planning for a life where she could establish permanent roots. At first, she thought she would gut renovate the original kitchen and bathrooms — like all the neighbors did. But just in time, she discovered this blog, and her thinking turned around. Yes, she had to do some renovation work — and it was ugly — but it’s all better now. She even started a blog to celebrate her journey, Hazard Girl.

mcduff the west highland terrier watchdog extraordinairePeggy has two decorating questions for us … Morever, she shares her story and some of the fabulous features of her house — including floors I’ve never seen before. This is a good one! –>

Howard Holt Pixieware towel hooks, Swivelier lights, and more…

swivelier lights Sing: “More more more, how do you like it how do you like it. More more more…” ‘Cuz there is a seemingly endless supply of vintage goodness including lots of NOS on the ‘bay. I don’t know how we keep all those factories in China humming — America’s closets and attics and basements and garages are FULL. Tip to using the ebay carousel: To go to a particular item, click on its photo (NOT on the ebay logo) — then, click on the lime green “View and Bid” box, which will take you to ebay. Disclosure: When you buy anything from these ebay carousels or after you click into ebay here, it nets me a teensy commission.

Midcentury modern planters — 19 circa-1950 designs from LaGardo Tackett available today

Lagardo Tackett ceramic planter from Vessels USA authentic Architectural Pottery design circa 1950Could these be more lovely? Researching the life and work of ceramicist LaGardo Tackett recently, I learned that 18 of his planter designs — and one amazing garden sculpture — are still in production and available today. In 1998 Vessel USA resurrected the iconic ceramics originally made famous by Max and Rita Lawrence’s Architectural Pottery company beginning in 1950. These LaGardo Tackett planters — which comprise the largest portion of Vessel USA’s line today — accessorized the famous Case Study houses, and were featured in a Museum of Modern Art exhibit as early as 1951. The planters are as classic as classic gets— and, yes, still Made in America.
