Vintage stoves will always have a very special place in my heart, because the first story I ever wrote about homes was about vintage stoves, for the (now defunct) Ann Arbor News in 1995. My neighbor Dave had salvaged a 1940s Magic Chef from his grandmother’s barn and sent it to Macy’s Texas Stove Works for restoration. My story was about why folks were starting to treasure vintage stoves — and where you could buy them. Hey, even then, 17 years ago (gulp) I was all about the where-to-get-the-stuff and where-to-get-it-restored. Do you think that after all this time I ended up right where I should be — writing this blog? I think so! Last uploader, when readers shared 234 pictures of their vintage small appliances, readers also asked to share their vintage large appliances. Above: A photo that came in early from reader JoAnn. Pretty!
This uploader is now closed — check out the 208 photos that readers submitted — they’re pretty darn amazing!

Argh! I have a 1962 turquoise GE stove that’s in three parts: a wall mount oven, a range top, and a hood with the range controls on it. But it’s in storage at my parents’ barn! I would upload if I could!

Oh oh oh, What wonderful appliances already! Tami, your stove is fantastic and the red glow dials and all are incredibly cool! This is the kind of stuff that I just love, and I peruse craigslist all the time for different appliances which I post in the forum for anyone interested. Who is looking for the aqua dishwasher and where are you? I will keep that in mind in my searching. Your Hotpoint set is great!
April says
Janet, Thanks so much! I’m the one looking for a turquoise dishwasher. Located in Denver, Co.

Ditto – and I really like how they are right next to each other, almost looks like it’s own single appliance with a great shape!

Thanks! 🙂

We have a Tappan Fabulous 400 for sale in IA. The kids bought a 1939 time capsule and just don’t appreciate the vintage awesomeness of this beauty. Makes my head spin.

Oh, this will be so much fun! If I can only unearth my stoves in the basement! I will love to see what everyone else has!

Yay, I just LOVE big vintage appliances! I uploaded a lot of photos (sorry Pam) of my 1950 Tappan Deluxe Range – mostly so anyone who is stove shopping or may be stove shopping in the future can see the lay out and closeups of some of it’s awesome features.
TappanTrailerTami says
In case anyone is wondering – the Tappan is 40″ wide.
BlueJay says
Tami,
Your Tappan stove is beautiful! I love all of the added storage and the chrome dashboard and oven. What a beauty!
TappanTrailerTami says
Thanks Blue Jay…….I love all the extra storage too, but had to give up having a stove with double ovens in exchange. I ended up buying a Westinghouse Roaster and stand to serve as a second semi-oven.
Before my Tappan, I almost bought an O’Keefe & Merritt with a single oven and the awesome Grill-O-Vator – they were so inventive back then! The Grill-O-Vator is a highly adjustable broiler, no pulling out the racks to adjust, very slick if you do a lot of broiling.
You can see one here:

Tami, a friend of mine had a stove like the one you linked us to in Los Angeles, in AQUA! It was something to behold. It came with the property she was renting (owned by her then, mother-in-law).

…just added a photo of the “Hi-Lo Matic” adjustable broiler-shelf in our 50’s kenmore “Super Deluxe” stove. Probably the same or similiar concept to the O’Keefe & Merritt Grill-O-Vator?
TappanTrailerTami says
Cheryl, just saw that your Hi Lo Matic broiler in your stove – that is awesome. I know the O’Keefe’s have a chrome handle with knob at the bottom that you move sideways into notches underneath it and that is what raises up their broiler. That is the only thing I think I am going to miss big time in my Tappan. My broiler is in the drawer under the oven, so you’re practically on the floor to use it! Your Kenmore is a beauty! I love the “InstaRay” insignia on it!
April says
Thanks so much you guys! Tami, yours is amazing! It’s like the cadillac of stoves. what a dashboard!

I wish I had a photo of my mom’s mangle (for pressing sheets and other linens) to submit. I can’t even believe she had such a thing and that we kept having to find a place for its hugeness every time we moved.
I think it might be lurking in my sister’s garage in another state. I’ll see if I can persuade her. . .

Marvel Anne, You made me smile with the story about the ironer. My mother and grandmother each had one. My Mom’s brand was Ironrite and it had the coolest chair with a swivel back. It got really hot and made those cotton sheets and shirts smell so good. Here is a picture from the web of one just like my Mom had. It was the sort of thing that was soooooo big I don’t think they made it through many moves into this century. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/ironrite.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.shelterrific.com/2009/05/07/blast-of-steam-from-the-past-the-ironrite-ironer&h=291&w=443&sz=61&tbnid=8ga904U7fNW3OM:&tbnh=72&tbnw=109&zoom=1&usg=__g04Lh_JyTapRXPm4PZ92Nqsp4i0=&docid=YfUwktVWNNCx4M&sa=X&ei=J5leUL6LCIn89gTVjYG4DA&ved=0CE4Q9QEwBQ&dur=1

I LOVE that Vent-a-Hood more than chocolate milk, and the stove too! Would love to see the rest of the kitchen if it is as Fabulous as what we can see in this photo.
TappanTrailerTami says
I love that Vent A Hood to….one of those may have to be on my must have list!
Lori Hendrix says
Thanks, I found the vent hood on the side of the road! I made my husband go back to get it. It was the right size (40″) but the wrong color, so I painted it white. He also made the box on top to hide the vent.

on the side of the road! way to go!
