Oh, how we love thee: The original features — big and small — in our homes. They managed to avoid the curse of the previous owner update. Or, maybe you found a time capsule whose first owner who knew they had something good, and didn’t change a thing. Yes, we neeeeeeeded to see the original “they don’t make ’em like that anymore” architectural details and features in readers’ old houses — and you gave us 483 photos, to be exact! There is some FANTASTIC stuff in here! Uploader is now closed — thanks, everyone, for playing. Time to gawk! Above: Close-up of the room divider in Andy A’s 1962 house. Oh my! See? We bet you’re gawkin’ already. 🙂

WOWOWOWOWOW Exposed chimney, beams, wood ceiling, skylight how amazing. I would set an Eames lounge chair right in that spot and just look at that ceiling, how beautiful!!
Rachelle says
John- funny you mention the Eames Lounge Chair- I grew up in West Michigan (near Herman Miller head quarters)- my dad worked for Herman Miller. I have yet to buy one (a little expensive- especially since all my money is going into the 1965 time capsule house from which this picture was taken). Someday!
John says
Oh man i would have loved to work there! I bought a knock off, and it came broken =/ that picture is amazing, and its a time capsle as well. Goodness very fortunate, i wish mine was. As ive said before i am a little jealous of you folks that are fortunate enough to have that.

Lauren – I think you’re referring to my pictures (the numbering changed as more pics are added)…they are vintage travel posters. Each year we purchased a new wall calendar (from Cavallini & Co) and we cut the posters out and place them in the frames. We have enough to rotate them around on a regular basis, and they add just the right amount of punch and color to the room.
Lauren says
Doug – thanks for your reply – I love the look of that!
Lauren says
Love a split level (I have never lived in one) – what are in the album frames from pic 7?

We’re planning to add a decorative concrete block wall to our garden,
so I’d love to see some close-up’s of other reader’s screen walls as inspiration for our design.

Hey Julia (Life on Churchill),
Looks like our “bookshelf/planter/pony wall” ‘s were separated at birth!

These are spectacular – John Feaster’s place is amazing. I have Moe lights in the cornices very similar to Lori’s as well. I recently went through and retrofitted the fluorescent fixtures to use T8 bulbs instead of T12s since I had some that were flickering and would buzz. The swap-out solved those issues.
Jen May says
We have the same lighting headers too… I was hoping someone here would have a suggestion to replace the fluorescent fixtures… I will look up the replacement you mentioned, thanks so much!

Whoever has the house with the bookshelf room divider, wow. Fantastic house, fantastic lighting! Similar in feel to my home…. so being completely partial…. I love it! LOL
I keep seeing things I love, the room divider with the different colored glass had me salivating. The Wright inspired wrought iron. I keep wanting to comment and keep seeing things I love. I love architecture, especially original features that make our homes unique, and uniquely ours. Silly how people rip these things out so they can be cookie cutter. I love being unique, and having a unique home as all of our pictures show. So hooray for us!!! I guess I will stop commenting, cause it will be all John if I don’t! =)

John’s house wow! Love to see more of Laurie’s 1960s home that was just purchased…
Laurie says
Jason,
I will post more. We have an aqua St. Charles Kitchen also. This house is pretty fun and large. There are 4 1/2 baths! It makes me feel like I live at my grandmothers house…if you can remember that feeling as a child.
John says
vintage kitchen…. how lucky!!!
Diane says
Hey John–I’m Diane from PA–was in love with this house since grade school and it went for sale some 40yrs later-bought it an hour after the listing was posted.
John says
What a great story!! Grow up loving a home, and one day own it! Talk about having your dream home.
Diane in CO says
Diane, love that story. How fitting you should own that house!

Cool unique features you guys have…I would’ve been very excited to uncover and find such coolness like that turquoise/gold polka dot divider & the wall mural.
Our house is basic modest ’50s tract so nothing really architectural and unique…but, we still have some original features like the fireplace, front door/windows, bathroom thermador.
