Every week, I think I’ve seen my favorite time capsule house.

But then…someone sends in a new one, and I’m in love all over again!

Camila B. aka Ms. Atomic sends this gem — she calls it “eye candy” – and rightly so – in Austin, Texas.

Yowza. I might just have to retire here! Tex-Mex and an indoor pool to boot.

Ever since the Des Moines midcentury mansion – I’ve decided I need an indoor pool! And now, introducing…Ms. Atomic:
Hi Pam,
It’s Ms. Atomic from flickr, I have to tell you that I greatly enjoy Retro Renovation! Although I am not a homeowner (yet) your abundance of information makes me feel like I could tackle a renovation project should my husband and I find that perfect atomic home. I often check Craigslist here in Northern, CA and at times other cities across the country, for wonderful MCM eye candy ; ) Well I found this gem on CL Austin, the ad reads:”This is a unique house built in 1960 by a commercial builder for his and his wife’s retirement. The house has some very nice original features, fixtures and bathroom tile. Open floorplan with knotty pine ceilings and metal and wood beams. It has been well maintained but it needs kitchen updating, painting, etc… It was built with commercial materials and quality. Addition of second story would offer views of downtown Austin and UT tower. Indoor swimming pool 32×12 with a 1/2 bathroom.”
It is quite an impressive home here is the link to the virtual tour: http://tours.tourfactory.com/tours/tour.asp?t=438427&idx=1
I am sure you’ll appreciate her original features and that sweet pool!!! At 600K I could never afford it, but she sure is sweet to look at!
Camila B.
Take Care,
Thank you, Ms. Atomic Camila!

Santa Rosa Sara has the sister affliction to dumpster diving: shamelessly jumping on the opportunity to photograph empty (or estate sale) houses. I have it, too, of course! I am so proud of you Sara — and thank you so much for this great set of time capsule photos.
Hmmm….Meanwhile, can we invent a term for this corollary to Dumpster Diving? Some quick thoughts:
- Kitsch Krashing?
- House Hijacking?
- Estate vultures?
Hmmm, these last two sound too aggressive, and we are a force for good!
- …More ideas, oh-so-literate readers?

In case you haven’t noticed – Mondays are becoming our Time Capsule Voyeurs day. As I mentioned recently, my other favorite TV show is CSI, Las Vegas original version. Parade Magazine did a very important story once with a personality assessment based on which CSI you liked – Las Vegas…New York…or Miami. Las Vegas fans were voyeurs. I even think they said dark and brooding. No comment.
Hey, it’s interesting, isn’t it – those CSI people are kind of like us — detectives. And in this photo — house detectives, at that!
Thanks to Madison for today’s awesome home from a Dallas real estate listing – a more modest size home than ones we’ve seen lately. I love love love love it. This is really a perfect house.

Madison says:
Hi Pam,
Here’s another interesting one in Dallas…there are many here as the area was booming in the 50’s-60’s. I almost put an offer on it myself, but decided on a different neighborhood.

There’s a window behind that mirror on the far wall in the yellow bathroom.

The kitchen is great, especially that copper vent-a-hood.
I moved into a 50’s home because I’ve always admired them, they have such character and strength. They’re really comfortable, practical homes. I could go on but I won’t. Thanks again for your site!
Thank you, Madison – and we can’t wait to see photos of your retro renovation when it’s ready for prime time!

Love the carport.

Awesome kitchen. I love the little cubby shelves under the wall cabinets. Yes, the ventahood is fabulous. And see those divider shelves in the kitchenette? I’d also like a get a closer look at that formica, I bet it’s cool.

The white paint is…too white. In general, I prefer off whites.
-
-
Very nice scale and the room flowthroughout this house looks like it’s probably good.
-
-
Love the little molding above the closet. Like the mirrors, too. But be careful where/how your mirrors reflect – feng shui, you know.
-
-
What a very pretty shade of pink. And look at that beyond-awesome … yet subdued! … wallpaper.
-
-
I am sure you all are happy to see a YELLOW bathroom!

Readers, I want you to repeat 1,000 times: I will only hang pinch pleats…I will only hang pinch pleats…I will…

Love the cast iron trim. I want to put out two lawn chairs and watch the world go by, right from this very spot.

My heroes. Sara, too, though – someone told me I looked like her once. I was so proud.

Angela, a new Flickr friend, sent me the listing link to this house in her Dallas neighborhood of Sparkman Estates. $255,000.

A real time capsule and perfect for another Monday of voyeuristic vintage living.

Oh my gosh, there are so many ideas to take from this house, I’m speechless!

Thanks so much, Angela!
