Here’s a slightly larger image of our bedroom-week photo – for the folks who seem to love the wallpaper so much. Sorry… this is a shot from a 50s ad, I can’t say I’ve ever seen fabulous wallpaper like this in person. Isn’t the lacquered side table…and upholstered tufted headboard wonderful. Gosh, today is “blue” day.

I went on a quick online hunt for that kind of pillow your granny always had, the kind that lets you sit up — all comfy, though — in bed. I didn’t find a lot of choices — and a number of them were way-over-engineered, if you ask me. But, I really like this down bed rest pillow from The Company Store. And, it’s available in 12 colors. On the cheap? Look for this simple tan number at Target.

Can’t you just imagine Betty Draper poised, forlorn, on the edge of this elegant bedspread. My hunt for authentic mid-century style bedspreads continues, and I love this design from Calico Corners. It is spot-on in its tailoring and the quilting of the fabric — this is classic, timeless. They make it for you: You go to the store…choose a fabric…decide whether you want quilting of the fabric (yes!)…choose welting (that fabric-covered piping that runs all along the edge) to match or contrast…they can even scallop the hem… give them your measurements and your credit card…and they make it for you. If you have this kind of dough re mi, get pinch pleat curtains in the same fabric, please. Heck yeah there is more…

Here’s a necessary accessory… a naccessory…for the bedroom. Well, you use heating pads in bed, right? “No annoying TV-Radio interference,” you’ll be glad to know. Mint in box, of course, $18, from vintage dame on etsy.

In my view, the most difficult part of “doing” a mid-century bedroom “right” is the bedspread. This week we will talk about the other stuff — the furniture, the windows, the rug, the paint and wallpaper, the lamps, the accessories and good feng shui. But, the bedspread is the hardest, because I don’t think the choices are very abundant. #1 on my list: Buy vintage, if you can find the style/quality/size/cootie-free design you want. Above: Bates’ Martha’s Choice bedspread from the Bates Mill Store. Heck yeah there is more…

This is what I’m talkin’ about – tailored bedspreads or “throws” with the seaming from headboard to base. This is the mid-century look! This is a 1967 bedcover pattern from McCalls — from etsy seller sewvintageladies.

The difficulty with vintage is finding King size spreads, I think that Queen is difficult, too. This full-sized flower power spread has a wonderful satin finish… great avocado colors… This kind of quilting — when you actually quilt around the flowers and tuft them up, is really wonderful… it gives great dimension to what is otherwise a big, flat, box taking up most of your room. You also see this kind of detail quilting done with flowered chintzes sometimes. Nice. From seller aubiejeanvintage. Watch my etsy favorites – over in the right-hand column — I’ll be adding bedroom this ‘n that all week.

I started out, all about the 50s. It wasn’t long before I totally adored the 60s. And now, I will do my best to suck you into the Best of the 70s vortex, right along with me. Despite the fact that I came of age — with all the associated horrors — during the 70s, I have to say that much of the design now appeals to me. Immensely. Today: A Palm Springs time capsule spotted by reader Frank. This first bedroom: Awesome. Heck yeah there is more…

A blanket made from your favorite, childhood tee shirts. My girlfriend Linda had one made from her childhood tee shirts about 15 years ago – and I always thought it was the coolest idea. I spotted this etsy seller – art2theextreme of Fishers, Indiana — whose shop seamstress can convert your tee shirt into a custom tee shirt memory blanket for $95.
