You can see an unmasked photo of the colors on the jump, but I had to use this one for the lead because: Oh my goodness, haven’t we all been here, amidst CHAOS. Now that the walls are prepped and the vanity and window are stripped of their old layers of paint (I hope you tested for lead and used proper safety/enviro precautions, Jamie), Jamie wants some “okay-now-I-must-really-make-a-final-decision-so-let-me-torture-myself-some-more” advice on what to do with the walls and the vanity to tie everything together. Okay, I am only assume she’s torturing herself — because that’s what I do, no question. Jamie has asked our help. Read on for her complete explanation… see some more photos (great curved ceilings!) and then let’s hear what you have to say, retro renovators. Jamie writes:

The bathroom "before" the wood vanity and window were stripped of old paint, and "before" the walls were prepped. AWESOME gorgeous basics, wouldn't you agree? That turquoise is LUMINOUS.

I was hoping you and the other readers could possibly give me some ideas for my bathroom. I have included a before-picture and a picture of how it looks now. The window frame and cabinets have already been stripped of all paint. When prepping the walls we came to the conclusion that the original paint was a pink that was an almost exact match to the sink, tub, and toilet. We were thinking that the cabinets may have originally been pink too….seems like a lot of PINK! Toying with the idea of staining the window and cabinets, but…not sure. I honestly would just love a fresh opinion…I have poured over the site and books but I am just not having any luck on ideas… I think the problem for me is trying to figure out all the different colors….pink , turquoise, and burgundy. I look at other bathrooms and haven’t quite found the same color combination…

Thanks so much! Jamie

What should Jamie do with the walls… and the vanity and window frame… to tie everything together in one sparkly jewel box bathroom package? I am going to hold back and let you readers run today’s show. A few more photos are below — delicious!
The most dramatic improvement: Marmoleum linoleum for both the floor and countertop, edged in stainless steel. Dave writes:

Hi Pam,

Just thought I’d drop you a note. Thanks to inspiration from your site, we just recently, i.e. in the last 24 hours, finished rejuvenating the kitchen in our 1938 house. It didn’t take much, the cabinets were in great shape and the 1958 GE range looks brand new (we’re only the second owners of the house), but the very neutral vinyl floors and formica had to go. We replaced the floor with a medium blue Marmoleum with a dark blue stripe and did the countertops with the same dark blue Marmoleum and the same stainless steel edging you did your countertops with. We finished off with a new Kohler sink with hudee ring.

Dave continues:

We’ve been in the house for right about a year. We outgrew our 900 sq ft 1931 brick house by the time our twin boys turned one and casually started trolling the real estate sites. We knew we wanted another brick house and were fond of the late 20’s through early 40’s architectures. We found this one at about 10 p.m. one night and I promptly drove over that night to check out the neighborhood. This house was about 2 miles west, right in the neighborhood we were most hoping to find something…. We put in a contingent offer and our old house sold the same day it was listed! This house is about 1,700 sq. ft. excluding the unfinished basement.

We bought it from a lady whose dad originally built the house and she had been living in it since she was 12. I even found a copy of the building permit in the basement dated 1939 with her dad’s name on it. We love it when old houses look old and have their original elements so needless to say we instantly fell in love with this house. My wife took a slight bit of convincing since the exterior architecture has a bit less whimsical character than our old house. Being late 30’s, it seemed to be gaining some of the minimalist traditional lines as opposed to the revival era cottage/tudor look of our early 30’s old house. The house was in impeccable shape. Prior to us moving in, the original owner had just removed red shag carpet covering the red oak hardwoods and douglas fir softwoods (upstairs).

I believe the only real non-original elements were kitchen floors and countertops and the light fixtures save for a fantastic deco chandelier in the dining room. We’ve gone through and replaced the non-original light fixtures with a combination of vintage and reproduction. We also replaced the switch plates and outlet plates with NOS brown bakelite plates, but many of the original brown bakelite tumbler switches are still installed and working. We haven’t taken many pictures of the inside of the house since we moved in, but I posted the staged real estate pics from last year if you would like to see them.

You can tell that the stove desperately needs a big white and chrome Big Chill fridge next to it, I’m still trying to convince my wife of that though… (Even so,) you’ll see my wife decided to get in on the whole retro thing with an attempt to recreate one of the campy vintage ads

Marmoleum field color: “Sparkling Lake”, this seemed almost identical to the color in the Armstrong ad

Marmoleum stripe and countertop color: “Deep Ocean”, this too seemed nearly identical

James at Nielsen Bros. Flooring (Seattle) did the install work (James was very patient when it came time to do the metal trim)

Light over the Fridge: Rejuvenation “Atlantic” fixture with “Streamline 8 inch Opal” shade

Light over the Dinette: Rejuvenation “Arcadia” fixture with ”Streamline 8 inch Opal” shade

Kohler Triton Facet (K-7776) and Kohler Triton Cross Handles (K-16012-3)

Kohler Bakersfield White Sink (K-5834) — I found out the hudee ring is sold separately.. (K-6599)

Stainless steel edging from New York Metals — One nice hint, too. Wherever I ended up with cracks in the mitered corners and whatnot, I used silver/gray gutter sealant as a filler. It blends in fairly nicely with the stainless. Soldering would probably be best, but this was far easier.

We got inspiration for the color palette from a 1941 armstrong ad I found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/americanvintagehome/3331401646/

He responded:

It’s funny you mention the wallpaper. I was just showing my wife some of the deco wallpaper on their site last night. You can’t see it in any of the photos, but as you leave the kitchen toward the hallway and head out the back door, there is a wall about 6 feet long covered with some wallpaper from the 70’s. Some of their wallpaper there would be perfect.

Fantastic work, Dave and Frances — the linoleum with the contrasting trim is fantastic, the countertop looks great, and you know I love that Kohler sink. Clearly, you show how making just some minor updates made to fundamentally sound original features can make for a charming (and not too expensive) renovation that makes the house truly feel like your own. I do have two questions I forgot to ask: I was under the impression that today’s linoleum in not particularly recommended for countertops. What were you told about this issue? Also, did you have to adjust the size of the countertop substrate material in order to accommodate the increased thickness of the linoleum vs. laminate? Thank you so much for sharing — this story will be very popular with readers whose homes or styles tend more toward 1940s sweetness than 1950s atomic.

Hi Pam,

I’ve been lurking on your website for several months now, re-awakening my fondness for the things I remember from growing up in the 60’s. I recently started a Facebook page for the subdivision I grew up in, located in South St. Louis County, Missouri… the houses were actually pretty architecturally boring, 864 sq. foot ranch boxes, but all had the typical 50’s fixtures since they were built in the mid-50’s. I had a pink bathroom in our house (and am a fan of your website) but thought I would send you this photo that I scanned in for my Facebook page since it shows the pink, steel kitchen cabinets that we had! And yes, that is me in the photo, about 18 months old, taken in 1965. You have my permission to use the photo if you have the opportunity to do so. I can remember seeing lots of photos of the pink bathrooms that your followers have sent you, but couldn’t recall any old photos of pink steel cabinets!

Scanning in the photo, I saw several details that the photo alone didn’t reveal… it looks like the walls were painted pink to match, with the 4″ white tiles as a backsplash! We had just bought the house from another family at the time this photo was taken, so I’m fairly certain this decor was inherited from the previous owners. My mother wasted no time in covering those cabinets with wood grain contact paper!

… I’m in the process of redecorating my basement (which is completely 80’s, a decade of decor that I’m not so fond of!) and plan to use a retro theme, more in line with the 50’s and 60’s. I already have my great aunt’s Heywood Wakefield dining room set (danish blonde modern) to go in it!

Thanks for all your efforts with the website… its so much fun to visit…and I’ll keep my eyes open for other MCM gems to shoot your way!

- Cory

Hey Pam,

Thanks for asking about the fancying up of the knotty pine kitchen in our 1956 ranch. : ) For years, my husband and I passed by this house every day, each time saying that if it ever went up for sale, we had to try to make it ours. We had no clue whatsoever about what the inside of the home looked like but of course, when we saw it in our minds, we pictured it with the original kitchen and baths and other period details still intact. When we finally did get the word that the house would be for sale, we anxiously awaited the day that we could see inside. Once inside the home, we were super excited to see that our mind’s eyes had been correct in that not only were the original baths intact – but the kitchen too…and it was so much better than we’d imagined – knotty pine from top to bottom with flagstone wall and lighted niches. We instantly fell in love and knew that we were home. We both admit now that it was the kitchen that sealed the deal. In July of last year, our dream came true and we closed on the house.

the kitchen "before"

The work in the kitchen has focused on cosmetic as well as more serious issues. Cosmetically, we set to work straight away sprucing up the woodwork in the kitchen. The walls, ceiling and cabinets are all knotty pine and they’d seen some years of dust, cooking grease and nicks and scratches. I know that there are a lot of different opinions on how to clean knotty pine but in our case, we mixed a tiny bit of Murphy’s oil soap in with hot water and gave all of the wood a wash with a slightly damp rag. Then we buffed it all with a clean cloth.

This took off so much of the grime from the years. I used a small bit of Simple Green mixed with water on some of the areas that were coated with cooking grease. The final touch was to use Old English to remove all of the scratches. A simple buffing with Old English made them look brand new. We were amazed at how well it worked and with just a small amount of the product too. A toothbrush was used on the hardware.

We removed some of the upper cabinet doors and put them in storage so that we could have more display space for a lot of the dishes and kitchen kitsch that we like to collect. The dishes added a nice splash of color to a room that is mostly wood. We found the original kitchen windows from above the sink in storage and after a good cleaning, we put them back up. It took a good deal of searching but we finally found the push bar hardware to match the rest of the windows in the house to go on them from a company called Blaine Window Hardware in Maryland that fabricates upon order. They matched perfectly.

We had an additional light put in on the ceiling because the corner at the stove was quite dark. Luckily, Home Depot still sells the fixture that matches so it looks like it has always been there.

When we moved into the house, we found that the stove didn’t work and learned more than we ever expected to know about 40″ ovens. We could either buy a new one for around a thousand bucks or search for a used one. We decided to look for a used one that would match the age of the house. That was quite the search! It took us to some very interesting places to say the least…

In the end, we found a beautiful old stove that was being sold from the sad gutting of a 50’s ranch across town. It looked showroom new inside and out and we were told that the lady who owned it never really cooked. Score! For a couple of hundred bucks, we took it home. It’s got all of the bells and whistles and some pretty snazzy lights on it too. Sometimes, I like to light it up and just look at it. Crazy but true. It’s my dream to have all vintage aqua appliances one day but we’ll see how long the current ones last for us.

We had some hardwired florescent lights removed from over the sink and a good deal of the budget was spent updating the breaker box and wiring. There were some pretty scary electrical issues in this house. There was also an unnerving issue with the kitchen switches sizzling when we flipped them. Eep! We also had some major plumbing issues in the kitchen. When we moved in, we learned that we could use neither the sink nor the dishwasher without water backing up into other places. After a lot of time and money spent with plumbers, we finally found out that the problem was inside of the wall pipes. Squirrels had been dropping walnuts into the plumbing exhaust vent pipes on our roof! (Note: We learned that it’s a good idea to cover these with strong wire mesh if you have squirrels in the area or live under trees) We had to remove our countertops and have the wall opened up to access the pipes so that the walnuts could be removed. What a mess! I love squirrels but not so much that day.

We just finished painting the kitchen a light mossy green and I think that it looks great with the pine details. I love old Western and woodsy memorabilia so it’s all seemed to fall together so sweetly.

One entire wall of the kitchen is a flagstone wall with niches that light up and I’ve enjoyed decorating those.

Along that wall is a long countertop and cabinet that according to the original blueprints, used to be a breakfast bar.

It’s great as a bar and buffet at parties. We hope to one day replace the ceramic tile flooring with a checkerboard pattern in VCT tiles but I think that will be several years down the line, probably after some other rooms have been tackled. On a side note, the Sellers of the house told us that when they bought the house, they were about to put down that very tile in the kitchen but their realtor told them that nobody wanted that style anymore and that it would be a horrible idea. Huh! I think that just goes to show that we should always do what makes US happy when decorating our houses and not worry about what “other people” like. I hope that we are in this house a long, long time but if for some reason we aren’t, I hope that the next folks down the line will also appreciate this knotty pine kitchen and keep it going. It’s easy to see that it’s got many more decades of service and charm left in it.

Thanks again, Pam!

Sincerely,
Kelly

Thank you, Kelly, for a wonderful, wonderful story. I also really appreciate your trials and tribulations regarding the electrical, plumbing and vent pipe issues — these are all the kinds of things prospective homeowners need to be very aware of, along with safety and environmental issues related to vintage homes. It’s good to budget for just these kinds of surprises — so that you can get to that good feeling of security that all your home’s basic maintenance issues are intact. Decorating is the icing on the cake. Your kitchen is just gorgeous — proof that knotty pine can definitely be worth preserving and maintaining.

Sunscreen Bob and Suntan Bob in their kitchen habitat. Troy – how is it that the vacation platters are ‘nested’ behind the backsplash? Did you put in a new countertop and design it that way? What is the countertop? Glad to see you kept the original cabinets and gas rangetop. I recently learned that the world will not stop revolving on its axis (or whatever) if we do not all have Viking Ranges.

What the? Photos of noodles in the half bath. Okay. See? Put three, six or nine of ANYTHING together and you have an artful statement. Troy, how long did it take you to get these tic-tac-toe organized just right? When you place your collections do you stress out just like the rest of most of humanity, or do you “see it” immediately. If the latter, do not answer the question or I might have to hate you.

Maribeth was game, and it turns out, so was the Knoxville News. Reporter Allison Rupp and I talked for more than an hour, then she went out to visit Maribeth and her family and their home. Meanwhile, photographer Saul Young looks like he had a blast with the photographs. The result: A great story about a 70s retro renovation with a fabulous photo gallery to boot. And — did you know that HGTV is in Knoxville? I bet they will see this, too, including mention of the pink Cinderella bathtub. Thanks, again, Maribeth, for opening up your home to the world all in the cause of preserving and cherishing our mid mod heritage. Thanks, too, to Allison and Saul for treating this story with such empathy and respect. Readers — if you would like to see your completed projects featured in your local newspaper, contact me and we’ll see if we can make it happen. Photo: Courtesy the Knoxville News / Saul Young.

That’s how I first *met* Alexandra Lee. She had taken some gorgeous photos of her parents’ pink bathroom, and it turns out, she had many other photos that I would describe as “luminous” in a way that respects the light and all the objects that surround us. Alexandra works in the fashion world, has a background in architecture, and has a new blog, what yaya likes. And even though she seems to be describing her home style as “California Country,” I thought we could learn some wonderful things from her (plus ogle her gorgeous images.) So I asked her to answer some questions.

Here’s what Alexandra has to say:

How does your work in the fashion industry influence your interior design aesthetic?

A great outfit is all about proportion and balance- even 1/8” makes a difference in creating the perfect look for a garment. Making visual assessments like this daily translates back into my home environment- searching for the perfect lamp to balance the weight of an end table, slightly changing the angle of a chair to affect the proportion of the room, making sure my color palette is engaging and agreeable. I’ve always absolutely loved fabric; working in apparel, I find that I am bringing new assessments of handfeel, finish, and construction to the home textiles I am attracted to.

Even more so than the very direct parallels (color, print, fabric, details), I find that current styling direction and lifestyle influences start to pop up in my home. I work creatively all through the day, which sets me up with a very forward-looking mindset; when it comes back to my personal aesthetic, I’m still wired to seek out “what is next”. What I am excited about in fashion right now- layering textures, added embellishment, eclectic combinations of modern and vintage, mixing materials, creating a base wardrobe of classics with novelty pieced in- could be applied directly to what I am excited about in interior design and how I shape my own personal aesthetic.

What hit me immediately when I first walked in the house was what we still call “the feel” – it had an obvious strength of heritage and family. We renovated slowly with care, really working to restore and enhance the architectural integrity of the home. I could elaborate for pages on how we did this! As a finished product, it actually has a very current feel- expanses of windows, bright open ceilings, an open plan- but all well-grounded within the era of the space. Like this home, my view of design is very much about mixing old with new, emphasizing joyful light, and nurturing innate qualities to bring forward something beautiful. It is very easy to find vintage objects or spaces and memorialize them merely as artifacts. After living in this house, I learned to celebrate the beauty and principle of the past by supplementing it with harmonious current touches of today. My favorite way to do this is through material- I love to build collections of different eras and detail, but with consistent physical elements- glassware, home textiles, even jewelry.

Your photos are so “luminous” — the “light” is the star. Talk to me about “light.”

Honestly, I just love light! I’m always seeking out the window seat at a restaurant and try to be outside in the sunshine as much as I possibly can! What I love about light is it’s changing qualities through the day, the way it forces you to focus on an item or view for that one specific moment, because it never will be exactly the same again. I take a lot of pictures because of this- I don’t want to miss anything that I think is beautiful. When you go back, it is never the same.

All of my background and education in architecture has really influenced my photography- when designing, I was always fascinated by how light and sun exposure could be “shaped” to create environments. Photography gives me the same excitement and even control- I love to see how I can capture or shape the light to create a mood for the viewer and really portray a sense of physical environment. Early in the morning is prime photography time for me- the day is fresh and the light is crisp, warm, inviting and positive.

Readers, the quote that really resonates with me (emphasis mine):

What I am excited about in fashion right now- layering textures, added embellishment, eclectic combinations of modern and vintage, mixing materials, creating a base wardrobe of classics with novelty pieced in- could be applied directly to what I am excited about in interior design and how I shape my own personal aesthetic.

I think this is right on, and worth paying attention to. Invest in classics when it comes to the expensive, lasting stuff… then layer, add bling, get eclectic — and get creative — with accessories and soft goods. It’s funny, but these same terms apply to collage — another art form that has a lot of learning to offer us as we grapple with designing interiors that deliver both function and beauty.

Oh, and one more thing. I love this quote that Alexandra put on her website. It is my quote of the year:

still round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate – jrr tolkien

Thank you, Alexandra. You are a rising star.

Chris and Angela wrote to me a few months ago, excited because they were about to close on a beautiful 1964 mid-century modern home in Wisconsin. Well, the deal went through successfully, and now this cute-overload couple is happily playing house in their stunning, designer-built house — a time capsule with mint-condition original lighting, Nutone, basement bar and heavens to betsy: two flocked wallpapers. (Can you live with that? tee hee.)

Before I launch Chris, let me explain that when he originally wrote, the couple was concerned about the sunset tan bathroom — didn’t quite know what to do with it even though they are “designer types.” I pointed them to a photo of one of my bathrooms, in which I used Home Depot “rose beige” tiles, and suggested something akin to the mint green, aqua and brown combination I used for wallpaper, linens and accessories. You can see how they picked up and ran with the suggestion in their bathroom design experiment to date.

So here’s the story and all the awesome 1964 time capsule eye candy. Chris writes:

Hi Pam,

My wife and I were lucky enough to just purchase this beautiful 1964 home. Our house is an original one of a kind. The original owners we bought the house from designed the floor plan and many of the details were constructed by the owner himself. Beautiful features, fixtures, stonework.

We are not finished decorating any of this yet, but had to share now since it will be a while until it’s finished. These are all just items we already had that we’re using until we find better suited ones, along with nice drapes.

The chocolate & mint accessories in the bathroom will work once we find ones we like, thanks for the color tip!

As you can see, right now we’re experimenting with chocolate, green and cyan.

The bathroom is nearly as-new with hardly any wear (they used the similar but smaller blue bathroom which will be undergoing restoration shortly). About the only non-original item is the faucet.

Note long sliding medicine cabinet under the mirror with an electrical outlet inside. Slanted cabinets. Also we have the NuTone 3-in-1 heater, light and fan.

Needless to say, this room will stay as-is forever. We need to find a chair appropriate for the dressing area,

and I need to clean that floor grout. Pretty easy restoration, I’d say!

Next up is our main hall with what we call

our “UFO” light fixture

And our cozy fireplace room that we’ve accessorized temporarily with some Danish Modern influences.

We love our dotted light fixtures here, too. NuTone built-in doorbell here, too. This room’s flooring is an interesting laminate that is clear with laminate chips in it that looks like pebbles in water. Unfortunately there is a lot of damage, so will need to be replaced eventually.

Entry tile. Pink/green, though camera flash brings out the
color. It’s more subdued. [Pam adds: I like the look of that wallpaper, too.]

Last up is our basement 1960’s paneled family room. We are starting to furnish and accessorize this room now in all oranges and greens. Need to find some orange barstools!

Oh, and can’t forget a couple samples of our flocked bedroom wallpaper, one orange… [Pam adds: I couldn't resist putting these images in super-size. Blow your mind, mon!]

…one blue.

Great site, it’s our favorite… keep up the good work!

Chris & Angela, near Milwaukee, WI

Thank you, Chris and Angela, for doing this great archiving of your home and for sharing it with us. Fantastic house — and you two sound like you are the perfect caretakers. I can’t wait to see what else you do with it, over time. xoxo
