Kitchens – Countertops

The new crop of laminates suitable for mid-century kitchen countertops continues. Reader Jon gets snaps for spotting this new “Motion” series of laminate from Pionite. Jon writes: Hi Pam, First, I love the site. I’ve been reading it since December when I purchased my teeny tiny 1946 house (originally a summer home) on the shore [...]

“Fake butcher block countertops” are another one of those original vintage house features that I often hear called “hideous” on other websites. (Crikey, how I have come to despise that word — it is overkill, please refrain.) I, on the other hand, not only have “no problem” with butcher block laminate, I am 100% on [...]

UPDATE (Oct 2011): Click over to –> this story to get an update on all three sources for boomerang laminate. Where to find a retro Formica countertop for a red, black and white kitchen? Pamela recently wrote to ask: Hi! I bought a home a couple of years ago … it’s a 10-year-old FL ranch, [...]

Here is another set of products from the past — still available today — with a fascinating history: ‘Memphis’ style laminates designed in 1978 by Ettore Sottsass, “the greatest Italian designer of the last half century.” These laminates are still offered by Abet Laminati. This is not necessarily a name familiar U.S. consumers, but Abet [...]

I love, love, love the design of your blog! Just came across it now. I am about to look at the vintage upholstery: I want a real retro design for my very curvaceous slipper chair.
But I just want to add: a tiny vintage second-hand shop in my town currently has a chair with an original Alexander Calder design on the fabric! The fabric is a little worn, but the design is wonderful. It is grey background with some pinks. The colours won’t work in my place (and I’m not a pink gal), and not crazy about the chair, but the pattern is marvellous.
I have been looking for years for the red vinyl “marble” look fabric. It used to be on the chrome dinnette sets from the 50′s. It was also availale in blue and yellow.
Do you have ny wsuch thing or can you refer me?
Thanks
Cheryn
Cheryn, Barsandbooths.com has had this for years. I am certain you could find it elsewhere. Here is my post on where to find vinyl, they have a red marble, but it’s not crackle ice and that is probably what you are looking for: http://retrorenovation.com/2009/06/02/where-to-find-vinyl-upholstery-fabric-with-the-vintage-naugahyde-look/
