I LOVE KNOTTY PINE KITCHENS. They were very popular in the postwar era — they fit with our interest in both western ranch and early American interiors… they were were affordable… and the material was available.

In fact, in researching this post I read a 2001 story from the New York Times that said knotty pine [...]

I LOVE KNOTTY PINE KITCHENS. They were very popular in the postwar era — they fit with our interest in both western ranch and early American interiors… they were were affordable… and the material was available.

In fact, in researching this post I read a 2001 story from the New York Times that said knotty pine has its fans again today – and also appeals to fans of the Scandinavian tradition.

And of course — Betty Draper’s kitchen on Mad Men is knotty pine!

As far as I can find, there are not too many mainstream cabinet companies making knotty pine cabinets today. Luckily, one company that does is: Cabico. They are a large Canadian company, and I had a positive experience with their product when I retro renovated by bathrooms a few years ago.

Their knotty pine – honey finish – is shown in the first door.. This honey colored finish looks pretty good, I believe, for a retro renovation knotty pine kitchen. But something even more amber/orange could be even better. Note the image above — a 1952 Formica ad — for one reference for door styles.

I’d also recommend a planked door like this traditional (3/4) overlay design from Dynasty/Omega. Reference only, I do not believe that Dynasty/Omega offers knotty pine. Cabico also says that they can make a full-overlay plank door.

My concern about a slab style like the third door (also a reference from Dynasty/Omega), is that pine might split from expansion/contraction as it is a pretty soft wood.

Best, if you are truly interested in pursuing this look, to consult with a cabinetry professional.

Final note: I recently saw “knotty cherry” cabinets at the Eugene Home Show. They were really nice looking — definitely had the knotty-pine groove going on — and cherry is a harder wood, an even better material for cabinets.

This rerun is for Sara, who is looking for a ranch house design to build. I originally ran this post back in spring 2008. Source for this design is the Small House Planning Bureau, St. Cloud, Minn. Year: No info.

“Not another one! Yes, another thing that I’m becoming obsessed with – collecting and then for hours, scrutinizing, vintage 50s house plans. It’s sort of like — the quest for Eldorado. The quest for the perfect little jewel box. Not that my house isn’t great. But I am intrigued to see if I can discover the perfect 50s house in the most compact footprint. I have these criteria, the house must have:

Two full bathrooms – honestly, I know that legions of Americans lived with one, but that is where I draw the line.

Foyer with adjacent coat closet – Foyers always get cluttered and then there’s the whole muddy boots thing. So, this must be a clearly defined area with handy storage.

Mudroom – Same as above with the addition that the mudroom must be between the garage and kitchen so that all junk can be left in this ante-way with a door to close behind it.

Good kitchen layout – I know it when I see it.

Dining room or area must also be well designed. If there’s a dining room – it needs to be in a flow where it can/will actually be used every day.

One, not two, front doors — It is very bad feng shui to have two doors (e.g. one main door, one visible into kitchen or mudroom) visible to the street. Like, the energy does not know where to enter.

On virtually all other counts — exterior design, layout, size of rooms — hey, I’m flexible! Here is my first pretty darn close to perfect home, discovered after a few hours of staring intently at a new stash of home plans. I’m telling you – hours of cheap and wholesome fun!

This house gains points for:

Utility/mudroom/lav off the back of the garage leading to the kitchen. Washer/dryer – right there.

Twoand a half baths.

Kitchen is nicely done, great flow to family room.

Bedrooms are small but that’s okay.

Foyer close enough, coat closet a little far from the action, but okey.

And (shown in original image at top, and below): Nice curb appeal

Loses points for:

Kind of big — but pretty darn well-done for 1625 s.f.! From a book of four-bedroom plans. Which is what makes all this stuff fit!

I don’t honestly think 20′ wide will do for a two-car garage, would have to be bigger, in reality.

Honestly, I think my quest will be complete when I find a 2 BR 2 BA 1,200 s.f. winner. But the more I look at this particular home design – the more I think, it’s a really really good one – especially considering that it is 4 BR. Stay tuned, the quest continues.

Last Saturday I invited readers to help wallpaper the world by sending in images of their favorite vintage wallpapers. We had three contributors — all wonderful examples and stories.

From Sumac Sue:

Hi. I was looking for a kitchen wallpaper that featured coffee pots, and I stumbled onto this one. I can’t imagine using it in my kitchen, although it does have a big blue coffee pot warming by the campfire! This paper would be great in a child’s room, or maybe in the den of someone who lives in cattle country.

There are several reasons I love this wallpaper — the scenes really seem to tell a story, and not just serve as a design. There’s a lot to stir up the imagination — cowboys, cattle, horses, a campfire scene complete with a fellow playing a harmonica. And the colors are gorgeous — just look at those cacti!

Makes me want to dust off the Louis L’Amour novels!

I found some other more conventional papers with coffee pots, but none that really wowed me like this paper does. We call our place the Coffee Pot Ranch, because we drink a lot of coffee, but, I don’t know if I want to be quite so literal about it by using cowboy wallpaper!

From Jason, it’s flamingos after dark –

This is my favorite wallpaper from Rosie’s. It’s so kitschy! I love flamingos and tropical places. I love the colors, although I have a feeling it would really darken the room too much. But I may just have to find a reason to “need” some. It would look great in a bathroom with pink and black tile. – Jason

Thank you, Jason, and write more often!

And from Portland Amy:

I thought this would take hours but I quickly found the exact same wallpaper that covered my Grandmother’s master bathroom. I would spend hours in that huge bathroom perched on her red velvet vanity stool surrounded by this flocked goodness. Some days I was a movie star, others I was a princess. If only I had an extra 350 bucks lying around.

Yup, Amy Sue. That about sums it up for all of us. Thanks, everyone, for playing!
