We are getting a clean start hehehe to 2009 with this post showcasing some simply wonderful bathtubs from the postwar period. Above: A 1959 Kohler Mayflower, recessed. Kohler still makes the Mayflower model – it’s petite, but very nice! If I had the space, I’d use it – in pink, of course!

Doesn’t this 1959 Kohler Cosmopolitan just glisten! Notice the little rings holding back the shower curtain in all these images. I’ve never seen this before. Do you think people really did this in their homes? Or is it just for advertising, to show off the tubs while still featuring a shower curtain? Readers – any real-life examples found in your time capsule homes?

The copy is fun to read. I think that Amy’s little tub/shower may be the Kohler Standish “showering bath” mentioned here.

I nabbed this sink yesterday – the rare, famous and oh so beautiful American Standard 1959 model. I now have it for sale in my shop…

This one is in beautiful shape – one teensy flake on the top against-wall edge barely visible. You can get legs and faucet over at deabath.com. Label still on the back.

This is probably my favorite sink of all time. It’s 36″ wide and 18″ deep, with the great ‘countertop’ with 9″ average space on both sides. Yet, the sink actually has a diminutive stance overall.

A yummy 1959 American Standard bathroom today – fabulous, don’t you agree? I LOVE the vanity – which we have seen before in pink (and which a reader actually told me that she bought!). And that toilet – why did these off-the-floor designs not catch on? Don’t you hate the dust bunnies (or worse) clinging to bottom of your toilet where it meets the floor? Ick. Also, check out the flooring, so emerging-groovy, and of course, the color palette – also heading decisively into the 60s. Ad: 1959 American Standard.
