Remember the Sunbeam appliance center (pictured at the bottom) that I bought myself for my birthday? Well, I recently saw this ad for another one, from Westinghouse. Isn’t it just spectacular?

Why these never caught on, I don’t quite understand. Probably the expense…But oh, as a design statement – well worth the investment. These are one of my favorite midcentury kitchen features – ever.

DESIGN TIP: Notice the nice little set of shelves built between two wall cabinets. A nice touch for collectibles, cookbooks or even appliances. Keep it tidy, though! Also a brilliant idea if you’re installing salvaged cabinets, and don’t have quite the right fit; see if you can make the shelves with extra cabinet frames cut down to fit…The idea in a postwar kitchen is to go for the “fitted look.”

A 1961 recessed Ling-Temco dishwasher meant to torture Speedway Ron

Speedway Ron has now developed an intense need to acquire every small appliance ever made that was recessed directly into the wall. To go with all his steel kitchens and now, he tells me, 4 vintage refrigerators in his possession:

Pam, again I blame you…I was pretty happy living my life and not knowing that Chambers ever made a full copper stove in the late 1950′s. Now I know it’s out there and I want one. Dare I say, that I might even NEED one. So I got to looking and I think I’ve found a full copper Chambers kitchen and it also has a stainless Hotpoint fridge in it. How cool would that be? I do think I need to try to buy it.

That would make four fridges that I don’t want to sell though. That’s a lot. Someday this will all be worth something right!!?? hehe… Ron
