VINTAGE EYE CANDY today — a complete catalog of steel kitchen cabinets from Montgomery Ward, circa 1941. You can see from this brochure, how much simpler kitchens were in the pre-war era. Of course, we were still in recovery from the Great Depression. Even a kitchen like this — which would seem so basic today — would have been immensely luxurious in 1941. Heck yeah there is more →
Edie’s happy aqua and white kitchen
We’ve had some spirited discussions about painting our wooden kitchen cabinets – and we’ve also shown some vintage two-tone illustrations before — and when I saw this photo, I thought it would appeal to readers, for sure. It’s Edie’s kitchen, from her blog, LifeInGrace. Isn’t it beautiful?
Colors for a 1956 Motorola tv console – a good reference for midcentury wood paints, stains and finishes

Oooooh, look at this great color chart – for Motorola television consoles in 1956. Click directly on the photo to get to the flickr photostream of What Makes the Pie Shops Tick – who has some additional images of vintage Motorola’s straight from the 1956 catalog. But back to the color chart — I liked this in particular, because it provides a good reference for paint, stain and finish options for anything wood – furniture, cabinetry, even paneling. Thanks, Pie Shop!
Retro style kitchen cabinets by Armstrong

ARMSTRONG — THE FLOORING COMPANY – also sells kitchen cabinets — and I really like the look of their Moderno line. These maple slab doors with a “slight radius” look like pretty good modern day proxies for classic vintage styles from the 50s and 60s. The finishes — including “natural” above and “toffee” and “cafe” in the gallery — are also quite nice. Replace those Euro-style cabinet pulls with… spotlight pulls from Rejuvenation… and you have a lovely and appropriate retro renovation kitchen. Heck yeah there is more →
50s kitchen and bathroom – in the pink – with Beauty Queen
![]()
Since so many readers are dealing with pink legacies, I’m on the lookout for vintage treatments. I actually wanted a pink kitchen, but the decorating gods rewarded my husband with the aquamarine that he preferred.
This Beauty Queen kitchen and lavanette are from the same company, Toledo Desk and Fixture Co., Maumee, Ohio. Oh how I wish I had a lavanette! (See one also in blue, in this 2007 post.)
And, the kitchen is pretty sweet, too. Notice the drawers that convex out – like the English Rose’s and Americans. And, the great stainless steel or chrome handles, like the GE’s. Very stylish!
