Decorating a mid-century fireplace – help!

Here is a tricky design question. Susan writes:
Hi Pam,
.
After two years, I still cannot figure out what to put on these shelves that are built into my fireplace!  They are 10.5″ wide and 5.75″ deep, and they are spaced about 11.5″ apart (vertically, from the top of one shelf to the top of the next, if that makes sense).  I thought I’d pose the question to you (and possibly your readers), since I can’t be the only one struggling with this…
.
Thanks,
Susan, aka Kitty Mommy

Koronette fireplace, bar, high fi combo

koronette-mantel-bar-high-fi

Spotted over on the Retro Renovation Forum — a Koronette combination electric fireplace and mantel that includes a hidden bar and high fi. Wow. Thanks, Katvt, for posting this craigslist item. And thanks, JSPatak, for identifying it. The piece looks to be in Central New Jersey, asking $650.

Retro fireplaces, from Malm – I can’t believe they still make these!

These are fabulous beyond belief — I am blown away that they still make these great, cone fireplaces! Okay, we’re now into 60s style…but I think one of these Malm Fireplaces will look great on the screen porch we’re planning out back. Alternatively: In the attic, when we get around to finishing off the space as an all purpose open space for yoga, reading, my daughter’s sleepovers and a spare guest room.

You can find cheaper versions of these, originals, on eBay. A company called “Preway” also made them, including in the famous orange. But, I think that buying this classic design but new is a great idea – including going with the gas logs!
