You have to admit that these retro fireplaces — all still made by Malm and for sale brand-new today — are sexy as can be. I’ve shown some once before, but with winter ahead – it’s time to adjust the thermostat.

These fireplaces are all so very ski bunny… you need a Flokati rug and Irish Coffee and you’re all set. I want I want I want. But I think I also need a cozy A-frame to put them in. Or…perhaps this is another reason to finish the attic, which needs its own heat source?!

If you are on a budget, you can hunt for used fireplaces like these by searching both “Preway” and “Malm” on c*list.  There seem to be a fair number of Preway’s out there. Orange was the hot color…and they seem to  go for about $150-$250.

The thing about the new Malm’s, though, is that they are…well, new. You have a much greater selection of shapes and many more colors to choose from. In addition, you can get them with gas logs – which is very convenient for creating mood – and warmth – instantly.

I love many of the current Malm models – up through the 70s and 80s styles, too.

They make such an architectural statement. But because of this, I do tend to see them in a room with pared down detailing. Set the fireplace in a useful, focal area, on nice tiles, and let the fireplace be the attention-grabber.

Hi I have a 1953 home in orlando florida and it has a Malm “Firejester” fire place. I am to understand it is quite rare and in very good condition considering the care of the home. It is terra cotta and quite ugly. I want to paint over it but am to understand this is not possible unless I have it sandblasted and that would do some major damage….help! We have brought back the terrazzo and will be painting the exterior in a retro color and would love to brighten up the living room by painting this fire place! – Jennifer

Out of my league – except to say (1) AWESOME fireplace, (2) Jennifer, you might want to consider living with the terra cotta a while…it might grow on you – I kinda like it and (3) remember readers – these are still for sale new!

Proving that RetroRenovators are not so uptight that we have to keep EVERYTHING that was original to the house, Palm Springs Stephan has begun his bathroom gut job, and offers up these treasures – free to anyone who wants to pay the shipping, or come ‘n get ‘em:

I have 185 of the 4×4 mottled green tiles, which should cover 23 square feet. Enough for a large backsplash, I suppose.

I also have 17 of the 6″ plain green large bullnose edge tiles, enough to create a 102 inch run.

They are free to whoever wants them. Just pay shipping. UPS would probably be cheapest, since they are heavy, 35-50 lbs.

Some other ideas on how to use the tiles: How about a groovy surround or base for a retro Malm fireplace? Or…use the mottled green 4×4s as a line of trim tile in a white bathroom… Or, a tabletop.
