time capsule

vintage-dor-file.jpg The recent Hollywood Regency style estate sale was such a treasure trove of strange and wonderful mid century details that here are some more photos to scrutize. For example, this may be the only blog in the world to feature Drano in its lead post – but look at the vintage “Dor-File” mounted to the inside of the yellow St. Charles sink cabinet. I love it, I want it! vintage-dor-file-view.jpg Click through here for a total of 24 more photos from this fabulous time capsule! Heck yeah there is more…

A vintage Magic Chef range used only 28 times since 1955… a pristine pink bathroom… and more “frozen in time” features in this amazing time capsule house in St. Louis…The owners only ever lived downstairs! Thanks to Meredith and her connections for spotting it and sending it right in. Real estate agent Christopher Thiemet reports that the original listing agent interviewed had advised the sellers to gut-and-renovate-ala-2009 before selling the house. He saw the gem this was and advised otherwise. Thank heavens they listened. Christopher sold the house faster than the speed of light and before it was officially listed – to a buyer who bought the whole thing kit, kaboodle, furniture – and clothes hanging in the closets. Hurray.

Read on for the story – and be sure to see even more photos at  Christopher’s excellent website here.

I am also reminded of this post – another family whose virtually unused kitchen was put in a museum. Heck yeah there is more…

retro basement

How to add light to your basement? This wonderful 60s room spotted by reader Tom B., ready with the camera for retro recon, provides a great example.

Tom writes:

“Pam, My wife and I hit up an estate sale late yesterday and stumbled across a “time capsule” room I just HAD to share with you:  Get a load of the green stained walls, built in seating nook and orange tweed carpet!!! and look at those windows!

Tom continues:

“a closer view-

“get a load of the sweet little handprints in the stain on the right-And a closer look at the windows-

“did i mention that this room is in THE BASEMENT!!!! there is about a 10″ gap between the walls with lighting along he ceiling:

“and here’s the next room over, similar windows and a false fireplace. (i loved this basement!!!!):

“The rest of the house was pretty unremarkable, just a normal, late 60’s ranch home. The kitchen had a wierd combo- the original wood cabinets/appliances with new beige/white corian countertops/backsplash. it was an, er, interesting look… (sorry no pics of that)

“I also picked up a new in box, ceramic doorknob escutcheon with gold fleur de lis printed on it along with a grocery bag full of other stuff for a whopping DOLLAR (like i said it was late)  Anyway, i hope you enjoy the pics, feel free to use them however you want.
your faithful reader,
TomB”

Thanks, Tom — great green paneling, wonderful carpet! And just to be super clear, readers — those are fake windows in the basement. Built out from the wall, with lights behind them, to simulate daylight at the touch of a button. Pretty nifty!

A 1950s time capsule ranch home in Lexington, Kentucky

by Pam Kueber on December 19, 2008

70s-wallpaper-flowers-on-bricks

All over America small, sweet homes like this have been lovingly tended by the families that built them after the war, and have lived in them ever since. During my recent trip to Kentucky, Sumac Sue took me and my sister on a tour of her Gardenside neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky…and the highlight had to be this amazing time capsule, Mr. Bartlett’s circa-1959 colonial-ranch house.

9 "Moe's in a row", I think

9 "Moe's in a row", I believe

Oh my goodness, some of the features in this 1966 Las Vegas time capsule are just exquisite.

The house is a little older than those I usually feature. But I couldn’t resist. The more immersed I become in designs of the 1946-1966 era (where I draw the lines around “postwar”), the more I also find myself tip-toeing into the late 60s and yes, early 70s. It’s all so much fun.

Love this house!

Love the doors!

Love the door handles!

Love the door bell!

Love love love the bathroom with its metallic wallpaper. I want my hair to go grey…then white…then blue in this bathroom mirror!

And did I mention the pool? Has anyone done definitive research – does Las Vegas have THE GREATEST mid mod houses in the nation?

Uncle Jack LeVine is a realtor who runs the Vintage Las Vegas blog, which I read every day. Yes, Jack, I really do! This is his listing. $495,000. Click here to see the online sales brochure. Thanks, Uncle Jack!

Pam,

Sorry to bombard you with yet another e-mail, but I have attached some photos of a home for sale in my neighborhood.  I really thought you’d get a kick out of this beautiful 1955 ‘time capsule’…especially the bathroom – not the usual pink I’m used to seeing in 50s baths, but still pretty darn cool!  I love the little built-in next to the fireplace, too!

I like to check out open houses as much as possible, and I got these from a beautiful color flyer they were handing out.  The best part about the whole thing is the price.  They have it listed for $219,000!  I believe I read that it only had one owner, as well.  Pretty neat, I think!

Enjoy,

Chris

Thanks, Chris! Great house! Readers, click on through…6 photos in all… Heck yeah there is more…

1963 midcentury time capsule contemporary in Des Moines

by pam kueber on September 19, 2008

Thanks to reader Shawna for this week’s 1963 time capsule home.

Another beauty from Des Moines.

First time ever on the market, and with a sauna!

Thank you, Shawna!!

Hi Pam!

Love the blog. It’s been a great resource for us. We recently purchased a 1958 one-owner blond brick ranch, and love the ideas shared here.

I really enjoy when you share retro home listings. Here’s a local home built in 1963 that I thought you might appreciate.

Here’s the complete listing.
