Vintage 1950s style stoves from Big Chill

A DAY LONG IN COMING: New, retro-style stoves with an authentic vintage look. Big Chill is now taking pre-orders for fall delivery of these 30″ ranges, which run on gas or propane. Eight colors. This stove has a far superior look to all previous attempts, which have been too caricatured, in my opinion. The Big Chills seems to mimic real stoves from back in the day. For example, the backsplash (or whatever you call it) is pretty similar to vintage Magic Chefs, from my recollection. Even at $4,295, I think they should do quite well — not just in the retro renovation market, but among all homeowners. Cozy comfy granny retro will continue to be hot hot hot for years to come, extending deep into the mainstream marketplace, I predict. Thanks, Jenny, and be on the lookout, readers, for a post featuring her retro reno under way – it’s a beaut!

Here’s the scoop on the pink applicances from the c*lister, who says: I have a vintage Frigidaire refigerator and electric stove. They are very retro looking and the color is pale pink. The stove is missing the drip trays, but you should be able to get generic ones at a hardware store. Both items worked as of 2002, but have been in storage since then. I can’t guarantee they work because there is no power at the storage facility. They are sold “as is” and as a pair. I don’t have any prices in mind. My main goal is to find a good home for them and keep them out of the landfill. If you are interested, please reply to this posting with an offer. These items are pickup only.

Urgent dumpster alert – Nashville! TODAY!

Ashley in Nashville sent me an email last night about her Kelvinator fridge, stove and hood up for grabs. They work and are in “amazingly good condition,” she says, they just don’t fit the design of her kitchen anymore (in a 1911 house). I responded and heard from her this morning:

Hey Pam,

I didn’t get your message until late last night, and then I had server problems and my e-mail response to you (below) just wouldn’t go!

Anyway, if you think you may find someone today, that would be great, as I’ve got some folks coming to get it this afternoon, just to haul it away.

Eeks oh gads these can’t go to the dump my heart is breaking, these are fabulous. Anyone out there who wants to snap these up better CALL ASHLEY NOW!

Update 3 p.m. : It seems that Ashley has saved these from the trash guys and now has them in her garage. Call if you’re interested. She seems unclear on the price – make her an offer!

Sumac Sue writes: Hi. Wanted to let you know that I saw a set of pink GE appliances at
the Lexington KY ReStore on Saturday (April 5). It was closing time,
and the store isn’t open on Sunday and Monday, so, they should still
be there on Tuesday! Pass the word along if you please.

The combo included a pink enamel-over-cast-iron double sink, a pink
wall oven, and a pink cook top or range (whatever you call it when it
sits in your counter). The cool thing about the cooktop is, it has
push button controls!

And the price for all three pieces together — $150! What a deal!

They need some scrubbing, of course. I don\’t know about how well they
work — didn’t have a chance to ask since it was closing time.

We have reached a point on our kitchen where we aren\’t in the frame
of mind to re-do things in order to work in these sweet appliances.
But I really think it would be fun to wash dishes in a pink sink!

Sure have enjoyed the site.

It’s about 90 days into this blog – and unbelievable that I still haven’t done a single post on vintage stoves. These were my first true retro love. But alas, my fickle passion turned to steel kitchen cabinets. Some week soon we will do stoves stoves stoves!

Meanwhile, if you live near New Jersey, have a 30″ space to fill, and can check it out — this vintage stove looks very nice, the lines are great, and I bet the broken glass could be fixed.. I also agree with the lister that you don’t see many 30″ vintage stoves – usually they are 36″ or 42″. Not too long left on this auction.

Regular readers know by now, that Nutone is just about my favorite company ever. If you need an exhaust fan (good idea!), there are really only two choices in my book – a vintage Nutone range top hood like this one – nice, and 42″ wide, like most vintage stoves – or, this new Nutone ceiling fan, still available in a retro look.
