READER NANCY (of the yellow bathroom and beautiful-but-uncleanable-brick fireplace) sends us a happy July 4 image – the wall hanging above has been by the front door all 50 years! Thanks, Nancy, and happy holiday, all!
Hi Pam – We are getting ready for the 4th of July & our granddaughter’s 2nd birthday. Wanted to show you how happy our 50’s home is. Don’t you think that the front almost looks like a happy face? Had to include the wall hanging by the front door – that has been there for all the 50 years & I love to decorate for holidays.
Have a great weekend!

I have a similar item…it’s a three-tiered wrought iron stand with the same little platforms to hold the plants. It must have been used outside as well, as one of the trays had rusted and my husband welded it back together for me. (He machinist and has a welder.)
I’m thinking of bringing it back inside and putting African violets on it .

Painted brick can look really good. I dry-brushed some off-white paint over the bricks around our fireplace because it was so dark and grungy. I left some of the brick surface showing through. The result is sort of cheesy, like something from the 80s, but, it’s better than the grungy bricks. We love our exterior brick, which looks like its 200 years old, even though the house was built in 1959. No plans to paint over it!

Thank you. Yes, the watermelons are wooden so we can enjoy them each year. We finally had to give up & paint the fireplace white. We tried everything to clean it but had no luck. We are happy w/ the painted brick, as you saw we have painted brick in the entry hall. The exterior has always been yellow.

How cheerful! Are those watermelons made of wood, or what? I like your painted brick exterior — what did you decide to do about your fireplace brick?
