Happy Holidays to all our readers, and thank you so much for all you do! Kate and I are disconnecting from the matrix and will be back on Jan. 1, all re-energized and roaring for more fun in 2013. Have a safe, peaceful holiday. xoxo. Thanks to Carol Hegeman, Supervisory Historian at the Eisenhower National Historic Site, for providing this wonderful 1957 Christmas card from the Eisenhower collection, featuring Mame and Ike in a Crosley utility vehicle. (Yes — that’s the same Crosley as produced steel kitchen cabinets, refrigerators and the like.) The Eisenhowers’ Christmas cards were designed and produced by Hallmark. Each year the Eisenhowers used a formal card, for obligatory mailings. More interesting (to me), Mamie also had personal cards designed — “fun” cards that she may have put on gifts she was giving, Carol explained. No question: This is a fun one. All named for Powel Crosley Jr. who is a very interesting character. He owned the Cincinnati Reds (who played at Crosley field), started WLW radio and was the father of many other inventions. I also love this thread because my grandmother’s name was Mamie. They don’t make great antique names like that anymore 🙂

Crosley also manufactured automobiles before and after WWII. They were the “bare bones” of the auto market – very small, inexpensive and seriously under powered with the engines lacking much horse power. They didn’t go very fast, but they were kinda cute.
