Hot off the presses: Just a few days ago Schumacher launched a new collection of wallpapers and fabrics designed by Vera Neumann — three wallpapers and 11 fabrics in all. Something I did not know: Schumacher says that Vera Neumann — who we also lovingly know as “Vintage Vera” — was their longest running collaborator, spanning from the 1940s to the 1960s! And with good reason: Her patterns are beautifully designed — colorful, whimsical, artful, all!

Early in my estate-sale-hunting life, I discovered vintage linen tea towels. It seemed that every home I entered had a stash of vintage linen tea towels — unused — many still with their labels — finally unpacked from a drawer and now for sale. These also are abundant on ebay, at very reasonable prices.Heck yeah there is more →
Do you love vintage-style Vera Neumann? Do you love a great deal? Then check out Home Goods, because right now they have lots of colorful new tablecloths featuring vintage Vera Neumann designs. Heck yeah there is more →
Yesterday’s breaking news post — 17 reproduction Vintage Vera scarves at Target on April 28th — is exciting. But if the Vintage Vera (lady)bug has bit you, and you don’t want to wait, good news, because there are a vast number and variety of vintage Vera scarves readily available today on Etsy, Ebay and in thrift stores. “People want to feel or express emotions
in their clothes and furnishings.
A bland cocoon is a dull existence.”
I was quite young when I fell in love with the designs of Vera Neumann. Both my Mother and Nana were huge fans of wearing Vera’s bright and cheerful scarves, sleeping on sheet sets that Vera designed, and putting Vera’s hand towels in the hall bathroom when guests were soon to arrive. My Mom tells me that she and my Nana used to “wait with baited breath” to see what Vera’s next new designs would be. I’ve since inherited several Vera scarves (several, featured in the collage above), sheets and towels that I now treasure, too. Be it her playful use of color, abstractions of nature or bold patterns and shapes, there is just something special about Vera’s work…
The towels are cotton, and cost just $5.95 each. Link: Vintage Vera Neumann dish towels at Crate & Barrel.
Thanks to Crate & Barrel for providing the images!
But also read on — New Old Stock vintage linen dish towels are also still widely available.
Update Summer 2010: Discontinued, we think??? Except for the black-and-white Imprints, which is on closeout sale as I type this. Thanks to reader Adam who wrote to let me know that vintage Vera Neumann designs were “rediscovered” a few years ago, and that some of her original designs are now available again at places like Macy’s. Right now, Macy’s has three table linen lines available on their website. At the left: Turning Leaf. Maybe it’s time to think ahead to a Merry Retro – Thanksgiving. Two more styles — both on sale as I write this — after the jump. Heck yeah there is more →
Vintage Vera — Vera Neumann — is just the best. Etsy had a lovely round up of vintage Vera scarves yesterday, one more delicious than the rest. I recently bought one with little houses on it, to wear to my home show appearances for good luck. Scarf above from etsy seller smartvintage.
Update: 17 Vintage Vera scarves are now on sale at Target in the store and online. There is no denying it — Vera Neumann is a mid century design icon — and it seems that she is gaining popularity in mainstream culture once again as many corporations have been partnering with The Vera Company to rerelease her patterns on everything from shower curtains to fine china. The latest partnership –The Vera Company has partnered with Target to release a line of spring scarves featuring Vera’s vibrant and lively patterns. The collection will be available in Target stores between April 28, 2013 and June 23, 2013 or while supplies last. There are a total of 17 designs being released in assorted colors and prints that reflect Vera’s signature design aesthetic — 12 of the designs will be available in Targets stores and the other 5 will be available exclusively on Target.com. Scarves will retail for $19.99.
So know that we’ve given you a complete history of Vera Neumann, what’s new out there in the stores this summer? The big news seems to be the Vintage Vera “Farmer’s Market” collection at Crate & Barrel [no longer available]. You know I love the rich cobalt blue — my 2012 Retro Renovation Color of the Year. The orange, chartreuse and grass green — all lovely, as well. There are more pieces to the collection. A great hostess gift or quick, pretty-cheap-and-cheerful kitchen pick-me-up.
