Launching my research about where to find mid century modern style fiberglass lamp shades, readers quickly pointed out that I needed to put a big spotlight on Meteor Lights — the San Francisco-based company that has been making fiberglass lamp shades fulltime since 1996. I believe this makes Meteor Lights the longest-running maker of fiberglass lamp shades for the retail market today! I immediately dialed up Meteor Lights owner Rob to find out more about his shades. Indeed, he is an experienced artisan who stains the color and paints the design onto each shade by hand. They are glowing gorgeous!Heck yeah there is more →
Fiberglass “wedding cake” lampshades — the groovy, googie, stacked mid century lamp shades we so love — are favorites among vintage collectors. But, they are increasingly hard to find. Fortunately, there are a few companies that make lovely reproductions brand new. One of them is Modilumi, based in Twin Cities, Minnesota. I talked to owner Lex this week about his company, which continues to grow and innovate.Heck yeah there is more →
In a recent uploader, readers submitted photos of 366 vintage table lamps. My assignment: Whittle the slide show down to a showcase of 20. This was really difficult! At first I tried earmarking only my favorites — but that was nearly every light. So, to cut the numbers into a digestible and fun-to-read post that didn’t continue forever — a theme was in order. I decided to focus on “wacky” and “wonderful”, but in reality some of these area also “gorgeous” and “dazzling.” Single adjectives are inadequate. Vintage table lamps are one of the most gratifying vintage collectibles that you can acquire: They are abundant, which means prices can be affordable… they are usually in great shape… you can put a pair in just about every room, so you get to shop a lot… they deliver a double — base and shade — bang-for-the-buck… and, when you get them into the room, they make a huge decorative statement, all retro blingy like. Let there be light — and let there be vintage table lamps. Above: Mystery reader uploaded this last week, said they found the base for $9 at Goodwill, and bought the shade from Moonshine. My bad, I’ve never done a story about Moon Shine Lamp & Shade. I think it was because I thought, “Everyone knows about them.” Well, in case you don’t, Moonshine is one of two key places to go to get custom-made, fiberglass lamp shades in true vintage atomic style. If you have a lamp base or a pair that need shades — and only a fiberglass beauty will do — and you can’t find vintage — now you know where to turn. D’Lana Arthur and her husband James (the cuties at the right) have been making the shades since 1998. Over that time, they’ve surely “done it all” — and D’Lana is trained in interior design — so they can recommend a design to make your pretty lamps truly stunning.
Anita has been decorating away! She scored a wonderful pair of chartreuse oriental figurine lamps – then topped them with shades from Meteor Lights. In addition, take a look at the way she’s used vintage grasscloth – and even a surfboard – in her mantletop display. I’m ready to tiki at your house, Anita!

The reason I tend to focus so much on kitchens and bathrooms is that these spaces, if they need work, are the costliest and most nerve wracking. But, I do care about the other rooms! So, when readers submitted more than 200 photos of their vintage and retro holiday decorating, I had a great chance to “mine” the photos for some examples of some of the great things going on in mid century living rooms today. For example: I’m for sure dreaming of a white Christmas in the Hibbard living room. See more on their blog: HibbardKitchen.Blogspot.com.
