Rent a fabulous Australian time capsule-esque house — 14 photos

Kate - Updated: August 22, 2020

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

mid century modern home in australiaBright, airy, open, colorful, bold, groovy, unique, inviting — and for rent! — yes, life looks darn good in this delicious midcentury modern Australian time capsuleish house for rent in Caulfield North, a city near Melbourne. Many thanks to Australian reader Rachel for the tip! This four-bedroom home, which was renovated in 2009, comes fully furnished, complete with upholstered built-in furniture, a sunken conversation pit, and a circular kitchen island. Stop me before I start drooling.

RETRO CHIC AT ITS FINEST!
This absolutely amazing and unique property must be seen to be appreciated. Coming Fully Furnished the originality of this home has been captured like no other.
Featuring 2 large living areas (both with built in bars), dining area with 12 seater table, a very groovy kitchen with 2 ovens and walk in pantry, sunken lounge (conversation pit) and informal dining area….all with spectacular views of the Palm Springs style back yard with pool, the design and features of this home are perfect for the entertainer!

The backyard not only features a self cleaning pool, but also a barbecue, luxurious day bed plus its own bathroom.
The master bedroom is an adult oasis with a tranquil green outlook, walk through wardrobes and an extravagant ensuite bathroom featuring a stone bath and shower. 3 further spacious bedrooms with built in robes and an abundance of natural light.

Apart from the ultimate WOW factor, this property includes large laundry, plenty of storage, ducted heating and cooling throughout, 4 car carport, intercom, a gardener and pool maintenance!

midcentury-banquetteThe home’s decor achieves an invigorating balance between calming neutrals and bold, vivid colors. So nicely done!

midcentury-modern-dining-roomThere are several places throughout the house to gather, including this dining room table with seating for 12, just off the sunken conversation pit — perhaps the location of choice for after dinner cocktails? I love how the warm wood glow is set off by the sea blue carpeting in this room.

Only 300km from me! But looks light years away. Too bad it’s in Melbourne – I can’t get hubby near a city.

Although the time capsule is MAGNIFICENT, you don’t need to go to Australia to see barrel roof goodness… just come to DC! http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/2012/05/13/gIQAUmrRNU_story_2.html

I had exactly the same thought, Cheryl! That sunken living room/convo pit is the best thing ever!

Wow! What a great way to spend time away from all that Northern Hemisphere winter bother.

As soon as I laid eyes on this house, memories of another mid century modern structure entered my mind, namely the local BBF restaurant: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/toutlereste/BBF-building.jpg

They don’t make ’em like they used to, that’s for sure.
