Have a holiday in an old train car

Pam Kueber - Updated: August 18, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

I stumbled into a story about staying in old, converted railway cars while on vacation in the U.K. This company in Cornwall has three different conversions for rent, including this old luggage van. To heck with the canned ham trailers. I want a rail car!

There is a wonderful little “motel” called Railroad Park in northern California. All the “rooms” are converted boxcars or cabooses (bed/sitting room and bath), and each sits on its own section of track. The restaurant is a converted dining car and there is a Shay locomotive on display. My husband and I stayed there on our honeymoon 20 years ago. It was totally and completely charming!

It’s the Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg PA:

We stayed there a few years ago. It wasn’t antiseptically clean but the atmosphere was great.

There is a place in the US that has train cars set up as separate “hotel” accomodations – it’s a south eastern state, don’t remember which one…….

West Virginia has a version of this as well. They will take you out to the middle of no-where, detach a cabose, and come back to get you a few days later.

I live in the UK and LOVE this site. My only frustration is you show such lovely stuff but we can never get it here, so I just look and dream ;o)

Thank you for this, we might give it a go and report back!
