Writing about 1930s Gladding McBean tiles the other day, I jumped over to Bungalow Bill’s to see what new/old temptations he had to offer. Sure enough: A gorgeous, early 1960s Harris Strong tile clock on his homepage. I watch Harris Strong on ebay, and bought a piece recently. Bill’s price for this clock is $498 — a reasonable price, according to my research. Bill explains the history of these exceptionally beautiful clocks:
In the late 1950’s and early 60’s the master woodworker Bill Chaiken worked for the Strong studios. During this time you can see many of the tiles mounted onto walnut slabs sometimes with parquetry designs in exotic woods… One of the best aspects of this tall wall clock is that it can either be hung vertically or horizontally.

I have a leaf insert from an old dining room table we no longer have, real nice solid wood. Too nice to burn or throw away. I think I just got an idea for a project.

That’s exactly what I thought when I first read the article. Clock mechanisms are very cheap to buy and can build anything you want, to sell and make money.
