Boomerang countertops in 11 new colors from Wilsonart

pam kueber - Updated: August 10, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Many thanks to Whitney, who just tipped me that Wilsonart has introduced 11 new colors of boomerang laminate. There now are a total of 14 colorways — the most of any manufacturer. I am quite liking the “butterscotch” above — looks like you could use this in a kitchen with yellow kitchen cabinets. There is a green-and-brown that also is great — for a kitchen with wood cabinets, knotty pine maybe even, that just needs a little zing. And for you fans of pink: Even Poodle Pink. Oh happy day: 14 colorways! Read on…

Well, I only got 10 images in. I don’t know which I’ve missed. See all 14 Wilsonart boomerang laminates here, within their Indie Collection. This is a special-order item. The source with the best prices today, as far as I know, is A Moment in Time (current advertiser). Their recently confirmed price for a 4′ x 8′ sheet of the original three patterns was $220, plus $30 shipping. I was not expecting breaking news on Sunday night at 8 p.m. I will check with A Moment In Time on their pricing, and with Wilsonart on “why the big expansion of colors” on Monday morning.

There are now three different manufacturers of boomerang laminate, each with variations on the classic design. For more information on these boomerang laminates available today, see my story dated Oct. 20, 2011. To see all my stories on countertop options for a retro kitchen, bath or bar, see my Kitchens/Countertops category.

Again: Supa thanks to Whitney. And yee haw, our boomerang selection just doubled.

I want to use Wilson Art Retro Malt on my kitchen counter but it only comes in 8′ sheets. My counter is 9’6″ so somewhere I would need to have a seam. I’ve tried to find another laminate that comes in 12′ sheets but I haven’t found one that I like as much as the Retro Malt. Has anyone else had this problem?
If I have to have a seam where is the best place to put it? I was thinking at the thin strip in front of and behind the sink would be less noticeable. But I don’t know if that is ok to have the seam near the sink for fear water would creep into the seam. Any advice?
Any pictures of a counter with a seam?
    Thank you

I have my original white laminate countertops in my kitchen and I just looked to see where the seams are. I have a double bowl stainless steel sink and the laminate seams are 4″ in from either edge of the sink (my counters are long too), so I would think that it is ok to have seams near the sink. Mine is 52 years old and still holding up well.

Ok, I’m bummed. I showed this to Mr. Wonderful last night, showed him the pricing and all of a sudden we’re in a discussion that if we do the counter, then we should replace the sink, (it’s not perfectly new, but it’s not dead yet either) and if we do the sink, then we should do the plumbing under the sink at the same time (has given out once since we’ve been here but he fixed it)…so all of a sudden an ~$600 face-lift escalates into a $2000 (+) project! 🙁

    Opinions appreciated.

I could sure go for the white with gold stars myself, so long as they are the thin “twinkly” type and not too busy with too many of them. Yeah, laminate makers…..bring it on! Dare say, perhaps even those stars on a solid black, or pink, or turquoise background would provide some options???

Now, if they would only come out with the white with gold stars….I’d have to get another new countertop!

Pam, I recently discovered that Lowe’s now carries Formica charcoal boomerang laminate:

Maybe this will lead to more colors being sold there and more widespread availability of boomerang.

Yes, Shirley — see my most recent posts about boomerang. You can get the Formica residential line at any big box store.

Ooops. I’m sorry. I meant Tammy, not Linda.

Hey Linda……any hope that you guys will come out with a reproduction of the old GE Textolite Linen pattern or the white with the little gold flecks that was so popular? Love the boomerangs but I’m afraid an entire kitchen counter of a zillion overlapping ones might make me a little dizzy.
