Vintage candle holders atop the Magic Chef stove – Jill S’s contest entry

pam kueber - Updated: May 4, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

jills-candle-holders.jpgJill’s entry into our contest:

Hi Pam,
This is my entry for the “Found objects. Found art” Contest. These are candle holders that I found in our basement in our 1950’s house when we moved in. I moved them on top of our 1949-1950 Magic Chef stove and that is their new home, they just seem to belong there. I don’t know if you can even get candles that fit them anymore. The size is bigger than a birthday candle, but smaller than most tapered candles that I have seen.
Thank you,
Jill Simpson

I forgot to mention that these little mushrooms are made out of wood.

Thank you Caroline for the insight on the Hanukkah candles!
I looked it up online and they are 3/8″,
which looks like the size that will fit my mushrooms.
Thank you Tikimama for thinking of me with your candles,
I really appreciate the kind offer!
Now that I know Hanukkah candles will fit I should be able
    to use those.
I sent Pam a photo of my 1949 stove to share with everyone.
It works great and it’s the focal point of my kitchen.
    Jill

Jill, are you in the U.S.? I was at an estate sale today, and I swear I bought some candles just for you! I’ve seen them before…they are vintage, in box, very thin taper candles. If you measure the holes in your candle holders, I’ll measure the candles, and if it looks like they’ll fit, they’re yours!

Some Hanukkah candles might fit. You can find them at the grocery store… sometimes.
