Jean’s entry into our Found Objects/Found Art contest…

jeans-ashtray-closeup.JPGShe writes:

Hi, Pam!

I have a weakness for souvenirs of places that I have never visited. Especially if the objects are mid-mod!

Since it is currently 7 degrees outside here in Ohio, here is a little bit of Florida sunshine that I picked up at a secondhand store.  It doesn’t go with anything I have, but I HAD to have it.

The ashtray from the hungry i is also from a secondhand store.  Since I am a mid-century relic myself, I vaguely remember this place.  I have yet to figure out why a drive-in restaurant had glass ashtrays!  Somebody enjoyed their meal enough to swipe this ashtray.

I am enjoying seeing all the entries.  Thanks for coming up with such a fun contest.

Yes, Tikimama, I wish they would get it, at Holiday Inn and lots of other places that are “updating” their logotypes and brand images. They move from wonderful, time-tested, well-loved and recognized logos to the bland, modern and boring updates. They waited so long to do it that their timing is exquisitely wrong!

I love this! The original “Hungry i” was a nightclub in San Francisco in the 50s and 60s. In the early days of their careers, Woody Allen, the Kingston Trio, Dick Cavett, Barbra Streisand and many others appeared there. It kills me that in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, some enterprising person decided to name their drive-in after the famous nightclub!

Can you imagine anyone putting graphics that great on such an object today? It was like they knew their buildings looked good, and the fonts, oh my! Has anyone else noticed Holiday Inn changing out their (wonderful, iconic) signs for little, bland “updated” ones? Yuck.

Great collectibles, Jean! I hear that ashtrays are one of the up-n-coming ones.

Those are really great. I love the Hungry restaurant tray, so interesting. Good finds, Jean!
